Trans cooler

Replaced the 170/3 speed manual for a 250/C4 in the 61 Comet.

Question;
will the stock 170's radiator be enough to cool the 250?
I will be putting an electric pusher fan in the front, seeing how there's no room for the mechanical fan.

Next obstacle;
new tranny is an automatic, meaning, there's no tranny fluid cooler in the radiator. I'm thinking of putting a trans cooler "somewhere."

After I got this far in writing, I decided to look in my Summit catalog.
Wha-la, there's few to pick from. :lol:

If running a stock C4, could I use a trans cooler with out a fan blowing on it? and where would be best to mount it?
They have a narrow one called Perma-Cool Frame Rail Cooler
It's 1.5" X 2.5" and comes 18" or 24" and can be tucked away.

In my 63 Comet with a 250 I have the C4 aux tranny cooler mounted in front of the radiator support on the passenger side of the car- look carefully at the pic and you can see the top of the cooler parallel to the grill.

I have it suspended by brackets sitting forward of the radiator support to allow air to pass through it. It does not really cover much of the radiator. Like you I have a 14" temp switch activated pusher fan and a 3 row radiator. Seems to work just fine.

More cooling pics on my webpage under "Radiator and Cooling" links.

Good luck!

the stock radiator will be just fine providing it, along with the remaining cooling components are clean and working correctly. The electric fan really will help as it comes on when you need it the most.
The tranny cooler addition is a good call. Get one like I did for my Astro van that has an automatic block-off valve. It remains closed until operating temp has been reached. Most stacked plate type coolers have them.

I once searched the internet for information on people who had cars with 150k+ miles on them. The consistent factors were staying on top of oil changes and that they used aux tranny coolers.
