Transmission help

Does anyone know if an SROD 4 speed from an '80 Mustang would be a direct replacement for the older 3 speed Ford manual trans, like that which would have came in a '70 Maverick? Obviously I know the SROD has a cable clutch setup, but I am talking the basic dimensions and how the transmission mounts up.

Thanks!

A SROD has a longer input shaft than a 3.03 so you will have to use the 80's SROD bellhousing as well. Shifter location depends on which version you have/need, rear mount will not line up exactly due to the increased overall length (same case + longer input/bellhousing), but you might be able to slot the holes or fab something fairly easily. The rear yoke will at least fit but if the length is too long then the driveshaft will have to be shortened.

Much easier fit with about the same result would be to use a mid 70's 4 speed toploader with O/D. They are exactly the same dimension as your 3.03 so it would use the existing bellhousing, mount, and driveshaft. Only the shifter is different (4 speed vrs. 3 speed).
