ya so I got up this mornign and decided I Wanted to take my car out for a spin, and while out I HAD to doa burnout, well I stopped in an empty area and brake torqued and spun em' till it hit the limiter at 5k and let off the brakes and looked at the boost gauge and saw the boost was climbing from 10 psi and went up to about 15, and I let off, I made sure the vacuum lines were all hooked up properly and made a quick run in 1st and it spooled to 10 stayed for a second or 2 then started climbing to around 12 before I let off. This is the 1st time I had driven it hard since I got the manifold sealed and the exhaust off. anyone know what would be causing this? can the wastegate not keep up orrrr? Thanks, Tommy

looking at some of your older pics, do you think your turbo may be a little small.
why i ask is the 1st time i turbo`d my 250 2v i used a little ihi turbo very similar to yours. i would initially get 10psi then it would boost creep up to and beyond 18psi and then fall flat on its face. the wastegate could not let enough air out thus the turbo would just keep spoolin and spoolin. also something else i experienced was the temperature gauge would as fast as the boost gauge, turbo was definately waaay too small, being spun too hard and heating the up too much.

lol yea its REALLY small, I was figuring that the wastegate wasnt able to allow enough past to keep it below the 10 psi, and it wasnt until I got my 4 manifold leaks fixed that I started experiencing this problem. as for the heating It does run a little bit hotter than usual but not obnoxiously high. I have been looking for a turbo and figured I would sell the setup on here or on ebay, or something. thanks for the help!

yeah T-bone get a bigger turbo...I might make you a deal on a T-3 setup ;)

you could get an external wastegate to help this problem. but I have known people to bore out the wastegate hole in the IHI and port it for max flow. if you look on turboford.org you might be able to find a good deal on a T-3 setup (under $200) which will basicly bolt in place and just need a new downpipe fabbed up and a new oil drain (bolt spacing is slightly wider on the drain flange)

have you thought about fabbing up a real header style manifold (not my turd log but something bigger?) if you did that you could sell off your turbo and manifold to someone on here for a couple bucks I am sure.

ya I have been really lookign into a bigger turbo. I dont think I really want to keep this setup, its too small and I am hoping to get this thing really scooting soon. as for the downpipe, thats nothing, I made this downpipe so it shoudl be too bad. As for the manifold I have been looking into it but not REALLY into it.

good idea...I didn't think anything else would bolt to that flange!

"Don't fear the log",
Drag 200 stang is in the 9's at 138 MPH on a modified log!! :shockin:

are you guys sure about the t-3 flange? my flange is a square with a circle hole. ummm do the the 2.3l ford turbos share this? im gonna look it up to be sure. I also have another log to mess around with if need be.

The 2.3 have a rectangular flange, maybe there is another design he's thinking of?

ya ummmm? I was unfamiliar of anytihng that bolted up to this. however I do see some t4 flanges on ebay that look like this but I dont know if they are the same

sorry I keep thinking 2.3L ihi which uses a rect pattern same as the T3. you could weld a steel flange onto your manifold (or maybe a section of a 2.3L manifold)and go T3.

I kow there are adaptor plates out there for turbos so maybe you can find a cheap one so you can bolt a T3 directly to it.

the T4 flange is much bigger than yours.

thats what I was thinking the only thing is my turbo is almost sitting on the frame, it cant go any lower so an adapter wouldnt work. hmmm linc did you get my pm about the turbos?

I did, but if you have space problems a TO4 is not for you, they are WAY larger than a T-3.....You would have to find a new place to mount it or buld a custom manifold similar to Will and Kelly's car

if I go with any size turbo thats even a little bigger its going to have to be relocated (basically any turbo) I guess Im going to end up with a j pipe or making a manifold.

Don't be embarassed to go the "j" pipe route, even though the header is cool, when you open your hood all they see is the turbo anyways.
I would actually like to see the real differences b/tw the two, performance wise.

Kirk I think if he goes to a bigger turbo wether j-pipe or log or equal length he will pick up a bit of power up top.

heh, ohhh Im goin for it! lol my friend got his t-3 (he has a 98 civic with a d16, and its rediculously slow, so he decided on a turbo, so I told him I would help him) hes having everything shipped ot my house, and so far he has the turbo, manifold, high pressure fuel pump, injecters, p28 ecu, obd1-obd2 harness adapter, BOV, and he bought a cheapo ebay intercooler, which does infact look pretty good, its 7" x 2 1/2" x 24" or something, he bought it for 85 bucks shipped which isnt bad but we'll see how its gonna work for him cause Ive now got some more important things to buy. I guess Im just gonna keep an eye out for a turbo!

well I lost another turbo on ebay... but I decided to test out what the turbo would do, I figured I would gradually try to get it up in psi each time, I started off going to 12, then 15 then finally 18, it reaches 18 psi at around 3000 rpms and does its faceplant. :( I hae been looking at gn turbos but cant seem to win one... I guess Ill have to wait another week and get more money... lol

How much are they selling for? Do you have any numbers of the auctions that ended?
