upgrading the valves

Well, it would appear that the ticking that started in the engine is worn valve guides. Combine the noise with alot of oil vapor and it all makes sense. I will verify in full soon-I adjusted the valves and the noise has stayed on-also put in new header gasket. I want to go with the oversize valves at this point and I think I recall the ones recommended being chevy 202/194? Please correct me if I am wrong and let me know what else I should need. Will my current retainers/springs work with this mod as well? I have an aquantaince that runs a high-po machine shop so that part is easy. this is still the 200 stock head btw.

8) the 1.75in/1.50ex is about as big as you can go valve wise in a small six ford head, and that is all you really need for the street.

Howdy back John and all:

The 1.75" intakes and 1.5" exhaust valves are an increase over your '66 heads 1.69" intake and 1.38" exhaust. Your '66 head will have 52 cc chambers and may require some unshrouding to take full advantage of the bigger valves. I'd also suggest that you have a 30 degree back cut added to the intake valves for an inexpensive boost in flow.

Even bigger valves are possible, but require extensive chamber reshaping and gain little over the 1.75"/15" combo. The small diameter bore of the 200 is the limiting factor.

Given your current mods I'm guessing you've had the head off previously. Was the head Milled? To compensate for the thicker after market composite head gasket you'll likely be using? You will want to, at least, maintain the stock, OEM CR.

Yes, the head has been milled, but has not gotten a thicker gasket resulting in higher compression. I have a newer cam_264/274 with 458 lift and it seems to perform well. What valves will I be using-part# and source? thanx much-I wasn't prepared for this right now, but want to get it done as soon as possible and with the least expense. Wish I could afford the aluminum head!

Howdy Back John:

While there are many sources for valves, I'd recommend Classic inline, which is the retail side of this forum. click on the Ford Six logo at the top and follow the clicks to valves. Also check out the 1.46" exhaust valves. I just saw that Mike (CI) now stocks them also.

"but has not gotten a thicker gasket resulting in higher compression." FYI a thicker head gasket results in lower compression ratio. Do you know what brand gasket was used when your engine was reassembled? How much was the head milled? Do you have adjustable rocker arms?

Maybe i misworded, I meant the compression was higher now due to the fact that I am not using a thicker gasket. the head has been shaved quite a bit and the block was decked as well. It's been so long that I forgot how much, but it was substantial. I have ordered items from Mike previously, but didn't realize he had the valves now. I will look into that!
