US based crossflow owners, parts availability?

I noticed someone selling a crossflow engine(EFI), used, complete for 600.00 online, which sounds like a good deal. My concern is parts availability, and time frames, and if it's worth messing with. On one hand, the price seems right, getting me to good performance earlier than scraping together cash for the new US aluminum head/intake. The other hand, parts availability and rebuild cost may drag things out to the point i would have been better off time and cost wise to wait to just do the US rebuild.

Any thoughts?

Most parts are easily sourced. Junkyard prices here are higher, as are some aftermarket bits. Airfreight is a cost, but time is never an issue - in reality typical shipping time from Australia to West Coast USA is about 5-6 calendar days.

The most significant issues with buying a motor like that online are making sure that it's actually delivered - not to be freighted from Oz after you pay - and also what bell(s) it is supplied with. Even the Borg-Warner auto bell can probably be backed up with a Jaguar or Volvo "Model 35" trans.

supposedly there are two engines already in portland, ready to go, with an alloy head and EFI. I plan on going with a t5, so i'd need to look into a bell for that. the info at http://fordsix.com/tech/engine/crossflow/xflow.php makes it look a little painful, but doable.

But that's why i'm leery about costs and such that follow the buy. my main plan is an aluminum head/EFI/manifold assembly for my US200, and that's a couple grand without breaking a sweat. the crossflow engine is complete, so for less than a third of the above i get a good head/manifold and EFI. However, rebuild costs can get a little out of hand depending on parts and such, so i've got a foot on each side of the fence.

And the other thing to wonder, is what running condition that engine was actually in... it's not complete really, so might have been sitting around a while.
I brought a few over, and they where fresh ones, totally complete, spic and span clean, etc.. at least a little easier to tell what you where getting that way I thought. He doesn't seem to sure what wiring is for it, lol...so want to make sure you get the right stuff.

As said, air mail is quick and not bad a price for most stuff..anything heavy could go via container if costs added up too much for the build.

I've got a spare new gasket set for that style (XF) crossflow kicking around, but that is about it (got tons of bits for Hemi-6's though  )

dunno about there but here in oz pre xflow pistons rods etc are the same as a late alloy 250 xflow so most parts are the same, even the sumps and cranks are interchangeable.

I have a couple of them.

bought a EFI model off OzHemi (was w clean motor when I got it)

bought a carbed one off another forum member along with a couple carb intakes.

also have a torn down 200 crossflow motor.

water pump can be had in the US (cast iron and not alloy)

I would switch to US alternator and car if possible.

the only thing you cna't buy local is going to be engine internals. and unless you are planning on a cam swap tonight then waiting a week or two is no biggie.

right now my motors are in storage but once I get down with my job assignment (maybe sooner) I was going to stash up some parts and build a motor or two. I have a line on another EFI 250 from another forum member
