Vacuum advance not working

then it sounds like a vaccuum problem under load

I think (not an expert) its carb related!

maybe the jetts are wrong size?

Ok, one more thing to add and HOPEFULLY this will be the thing that makes someones mind click and say "oh, yeah, thats the doohickey on the thingamajiggy, they always do that and they are CHEAP!". I ran the car again today and I noticed this time that if I BARELY push on the pedal the car seems to lurch forward and then back down. Just a real suttle faster-slower thing. That was when I was driving around 20mph. I also verified again that it didn't do it in idle, i rev'ed it up slowly and fast just to check. Here is everything again

1. rebuilt the engine and after installing (ran perfect first time I test drove it) it started having a hesitation and died 3 times.

2. At lower speeds (20 - 30mph) it will almost die if I mildly slowly depress the accelerator but if I let off the gas it will catch and I can continue on.

3. At Higher speeds (50 - 55) I still notice it, but on a much smaller level, I don't get the nervous feeling when it starts hesitating at this speed, feeling like its going to die.

4. Changed the Distributor because It was known that the distributor was bad anyways, and of course the day after I bought it AZCOUPE tells us about this new GREAT distributor thats going to be available. That didn't fix it. same problem

5. Today, if barely depressing the pedal instead of mildly or mashing it through the floor, the engine like lurches forward for a sec and then lets off. Its slightly noticable, like I could definitely feel it, but a passenger might not feel it.

I really can't think of anything that is doing it, so I might just wait until my father comes down for Christmas and have him look at it. This might be a good thread for someone else who is having this exact problem later. I have to leave them great details on whats happening.

here's two more thoughts

1) there could be crap inthe gas tank thats partially blocking the screen...when it sucks gas slowly, its fine...when you put a demand on it, particles block it

2) spark plugs might be gapped wrong...and bad...thus it cathes only when jumping on it, or very lightly...etc

it sounds fuel related...like carb or similar...

but I is no expert on that stuff...

I was starting to lean towards the spark plugs, because I never changed them I had them in the old engine and they had some carbon buildup on them, but I thought that if the plugs were bad it would be happening all the time instead of just certain times. I'll definitely check them out.

the accelerator pump is good on the carb and I'm not sure what size jets are on it but the carb worked perfectly when I took it off, and I did nothing to it.

Here is a pic of my spark plugs, I pulled them all out just to see and they are all a nice tan color except for cylinder #4. The pic below is #4 on the left and #5 on the right, all the rest look like #5. Is this a big deal with #4?

In the context of your problems, no. Coil lead and coil are worth investigating. Inspect the inside of your distributor cap for any misadventure - I have seen the carbon button fail at times. Confirm the advance mechanism is correct and functional. Some rebuilt dizzies have an incorrect set of advance weights and springs. This will really not help if there are other problems, too.

When you have ascertained that everything in the ignition is up to scratch, then return to the carb. An inline fuel pressure gauge is a good first step.

Regards, Adam.

I may or may not have figured it out. I adjusted the idle mixture screws out about half a turn and test drove it and it seems like it got better, so I might take them out another half turn. Also, side note while taking the first test drive I heard a small pop noise and the engine starting running HORRIBLY. I had a rubber cap over an unused vacuum port and it seems to have either blown off (hopefully) or sucked into the engine (PLEASE NO). I don't see it going into the engine.

Another note, I bought new Accel 8mm wires (blue) and put them in with new bosch platinum spark plugs. Those wires had to be cut and fit to length and were not very much fun to do. I have a new picture below with the air cleaner on and with the new wires, I also put a link to a bigger picture in the "Eye Candy" section.
