Valve seals

Has anyone installed teflon valve seals? What size did you use? I had my valve guides cut down to .500 and the mechanic installed new valve seals, but I think they are too big. It started smoking at startup and while idling, and also while decelerating or going downhill backing off, and when I pulled the head off and miked the valves, I found that the valves mike out about .309, now if he used 5/16" seals that would be .3125, is that right? Well I think he used 11/32" seals which are .34375. If I slide the seals on the valves, you can see a small gap. Now he did put new valve guides in and he might have used 5/16" seals but if he did they have stretched, is that possible. By the way before I tore it apart, I did a compression check and it showed 160 in both 1 and 2 cyl. and 170-175 in the remaining 4. Is it still possible for the oil ring to be screwed up? Might be time for the 2-2v head if I had the linkage figured out. Really that head is for another engine I built.

#513 should work for you. Get the 16-pack so you have some spares in case you tear one. There should be no gap, and they don't stretch. They fit tight enough that a plastic condom is included that goes over the stem tip to keep it from getting hung up in the groove.

I'm using white teflon #500 (I have .530 guides), but I've just started breaking it in. I believe Mike said that the blue teflon was better, but this was what I could find. I've also read that the Viton is preferred because it conforms as the guides wear.

Five of the stock umbrella-type had split on the log head, couldn't take the heat I guess.
