i am about to put the cylinder head in when i noticed that the opening for the water temp sending unit is rather small. the original falcon unit is not going to fit in that small hole. what have others done, and what does the aussie engine use?

Michael, I know what you mean about the hole for the water sending unit being very small; at least smaller than on the previous head that I had on my 200cid. I was going to install a temperature gauge anyway, so I installed a 1/2" pipe "tee" at the front of engine on the passenger side, where the heater hose connection goes, and then tee'd off for both the heater hose and the temperature gauge probe. It took a couple of brass bushings also; but everything works fine. This location is still prior to the thermostat, so you are still getting a reading prior to the thermostat opening up! Jim

Go to Napa and ask them for a temp sender that fits the hole.

I think I got one for a '66 mustang and it's 1/8" NPT.

yeah, just hit the auto parts store. They have senders with all kinds of diameters and connecting ends. Just sort through a few and you'll find one that will work.
This is what I did when I swapped to a different thermostat housing.

You really want the sender to be as much "into" the block as possible. Eddie posted on what is termed a "dead leg" where an area of fluid flow is stagnant or lesser flowing (and thus different in qualities) compared to the main flow of fluid in that circuit. VDO make a sender that fits - I have one here.
