for some reason for the past few months everytime I turn my car on when she is cold she has a hard time getting a smooth idea in fact if she is cold like same temp as outside (40-50 F for now) she gets really violent and coughs out. but really scares me is that I think I am hearing her knock around when I turn her on. when the car starts going after I try for a few more seconds everything is good. I think I am hearing knocking but it only lasts for like the first 2 seconds at most but it is still scary. I am not sure if it not enough fuel or regulation of fuel, but having the choke open or closed doesnt really make a difference. Oh yea about the choke still I can only have it so lean that for the first 4- 5 min while driving her the choke is still on and and wont ever get past 1400 rpm. before that it was on for almost the entire time even sometimes after I got off the high way for driving 5 min on it would go on again after turning off before getting on the high way. screwed isnt it.

is my car knocking. if it is knocking for the first couple of seconds what will this due to the car in the long run? she does not knock at any other time ever.

oh and one more detail I have one fuel filter before the pump like just before it and one after it that is still connected to the carb. is that cause for some concern?

Don't see how filters would be affected by temps. However, you have choke problems. Choke problems can cause an engine to buck, cough, gag, etc.
Consider JC Whitney for an electric choke conversion. Better still, get a manual choke. You do need to make sure you understand the different adjustments for the choke, such as pull-down and high speed idle. First, the bimetallic choke spring and the butterfly must operate properly. Then, the different settings must be set in the correct order.
The easiest thing is to find an old timer who has rebuilt carbs. The next best thing is to read, and reread the instructions while fondling the carb, until you understand what everything is supposed to do. 8)

HI
I would start with a tune up...

If the points are bad they well thro the timming off.

plug fuel filters well cause it to run lean and cause it to pop and not get enouff fuel to go very fast (only able to turn 14oo rpm) also the need to run with the choke on to make it run richer.. pull the hose off at the carb and turn it over and see how much fuel comes out.. It should be a good amount..

I would also go throu the carb.. eather just take it apart and spray carb cleaner throu all the passagess and such and put it back together or put a kit in it.. (not knowing what carb you have it is very simple especiualy if its a 1 b. carb..). The fuel mixture screw is in the base plate of the carb. when you put it back in just turn it in untill it touches bottom (not hard , gental) and back it out 1 1/2 to 2 turns.. to get it running then adjust to best idle from there. with Rpm set at 600..

The knocking could be the need for a oil change.. with the motor maybe running lean it well get hot and toast the oil.. My Comet started that knocking so I changed the oil and it went away..

Hope this helps
Tim
