What a difference a jet makes!

Well, I got the Comet running a couple of weekends ago after a 32 year hiatus in a field! Drove her all week. Everything was ok. I expected a few hiccups! I have the 144 with the 1bbl and a 2 speed. I replaced the 1904 Holley with an NOS 1908 Holley. I had a slight tremble during slow acceleration, almost felt like a clutch slipping. Well, when I installed the carb, I thought since the new one was a little bigger, and I have nothing close to a performance eng I would replace the stock jet in the 1908 with my stock jet in the 1904. 1904 was a 52, 1908 was a 64. So after messing with the air mixture screw as much as possible I decided to replace the jet with a spare 62 I had. Voila! Immediate smoother idling and much smoother pick up! I think, apart from the leaking exhaust she almost runs like new!
To fill some of you here in, I found this car in a field in Wisconsin. Floors were gone, I mean rocker to rocker and fire wall to rear obliterated! But she showed 32K on the odo and everything else was tight. Door hinges, locks, no wear. I pulled the head to have the rear exhaust manifold ear brazed. The cylinders were PERFECT! You could still see the cross hatch. No ridge. This was a weekend project and the car was kept at my in-laws garage about 25 miles away. But after getting everything back together I was plagued with a serious vacuum leak. Now the fuel pump is a dual acting and it was replaced, so I never thought to look at it. I bought the new carb and still nothing! She would not idle. Well, it turned out to be the vacuum part of the pump. I bypassed it, wipers are directly off the manifold for now. And after the jet change last nite, what a cruiser! She really isn't even that slow! I have had 80 mph out of her and so far, before the jet change averaged 26 mpg for two tanks!

Whew! What a blast!

Tell me about it, I did the same thing to my YF-1 on the 200 in the bronco. Drilled out the idle jet to .065" and main to .110", talk about a difference, WOW!!! I am even getting better gas mileage, from about 9 mpg to about 12 mpg. I also did the ram intake induction (Mustang Geezer), oh yeah!!! Looks cool, too, and lots of comments on it (mostly curious). Have a good one.

hmm if that makes such a difference...does anyone know what good jet sizes for the carter YFA would be or would it be better to leave it stock???

yep. even with figuring in the tire/speedo issue...I cant get more than 225 out of a tank

it seems that if I am slightly heavy on gas pedal...I can almost watch the gauge drop

this weekend I am degreasing...and checking for a gas leak...

my othe rthought is that since I havent driven much since the rebuild...maybe 1500 miles...maybe it dates back to the carb rebuild...and same shady mechanice might have wrong jets in there

can anyone reccommend jets for my autolite 100?

I don't remember but do you know the specifications for your block and cyclinder head (specifically manufactered dates).

me?

My car was born sep 7th 1967 I think...original block and head

i think I wa srobbed of some compression with a felpro gasket...otherwise..stock.

had 1100 rebuilt..thats it...and the pertronix etc in my sig file

Okay.

I've heard and read where others have had problems with their Autolites running rich even after a rebuild. Have you considered swapping carburetors - like maybe a Holley 1946. It flows a little more and would fit your '68 intake perfectly.

But as far as jets are concerned, try Tom Stovebolt. I think he would be able to help you with the appropriate jet for your 1100, if you decide to keep it.

Also, did you ever get a timing light? Do you know what the timing is set for?
