What are these intake doohickies for?

Addo, I assume also that the water cooling may have also help deal with the problem of vapour lock which used to be an issue in hot conditions but I can't recall if it used to affect moving as well as staionary vehicles.
 
Okay, haven't read the complete discussion here, but I'll say this.

On my 3.9 dual injection (single point carb style) manifold, I cut that whole water jacket right out, then made it nice and smooth and neat.
Running a 350 holley instead of injection, and so far have noticed better performance, and no loss of power when at proper running temp.
God damn this thing has some grunt. Pics and video coming soon.
 
the inlet was plugged and then epoxied. then moved to the bottom.
