Alright, I was refered to this forum from the ford trucks enthusiast web site. I am wondering about upgrading from the 170 to a 200 or a 250. I need more power but i am not wanting to go to a 302. My question is, can i use one of these (200, 250) motors in place of the 170 without any major mods. I dont want to change my trannie. I am trying to stay as close to stock as i can. BTW I have a 1970 Bronco Halfcab, uncut and mostly original. The old 170 just wont pull the hills around here and i am tired of holding up traffic. I like the idea of the 250 but dont have any info on the swapability of these motors. Will the 200 or 250 bolt up, if not what mods are required. Or should i just buy another bronco that already has a 302 in it (Ha Ha Ha). Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge.

externally, the 200 and the 170 are the same block, there might be minor things to pay attention to, but they are minor
the 250 would be a bit better in a truck type, but it is a little bigger, so you have to get just a little creative depending on how much hood room you have
check this section for info on it

it's designed for the early Mustang/Falcons, but it's got what you're going to have to pay attention too

once you get that done, if you're concerned with sticking close to stock, exhaust, cleaning up the head with some minor porting and a little bump in compression, upgrading the ignition and possibly a 2bbl carb would really wake it up, and all can be easily replaced with stock parts

To use the 250, you will have to change your transmission. At least the bellhousing. If you still have a 3 speed, the 6cyl 3 speed may bolt up to the 250/V8 bellhousing.
I have a 250 for my '66 Bronco, but I also changed the transmission to a ZF 5 speed.

I did a 170-200 swap this winter and it was not bad. I swapped my 62 for a 78 block. the only problems I really had was the 78 block had a casting boss in the way of my factory fuel filter (mounts by the coil) that I had to grind down. other than swapping over extrenal stuff it was a breeze (just time comsuming to move eerything over)

for a trans I went to a t5 form my 2.77. I had a bell from AL so I jus tbolted that up. only suprises I had with that was needing a new trans support (t5 is a little longer) a new starter (3 vs 2 bolt) and needing a new pushrod for the clutch (30 min job to bend some round stock up) it took me a little over a week to get it all done.

as long as you have a 3.03 trans a 200 will bolt up with no issues at all.
