What is it?

Anyone have a clue what motor this is? Hummmm..... is it a small six? OZ, AR, US, or...... : The owner of the car wants to know if I have any parts that will fit his motor? What do I tell him?

I'll post a pic that shows the lettering on the valve cover (which I covered up) in a couple days.

PS: The owner, who sent me the pic, can't guess. That would be cheating.

Kind of looks like some of those wacked out Argie engines, but that looks like an iron head. Lots of sheet metal in the engine bay, so some kind of manufactured bay... maybe marine?

Looks like a small six with maybe the log milled off and custom manifolding added? Temp sender,distributor placement and block look like normal stuff.

exactly what i'm thinking, temp, dist, all look like a normal 170,200, 250 but all the sheet in the background, makes me think marine (or very custom vehicle), and I can't really see the bell housing, but that is a really nice TB/side draft setup.. but that's an iron head (what kind, i'm not sure), i'm positive, and that's a standard block as far as i can see.

Marine engine.
There isn't a bell. However, you can see something bolted in a bell hole.
This would indicate an outdrive of some sort.
Throttle cable is routed forward.
The dizzy has some type of module mounted to the side. Non US?
Could that be an early iron crossflow valve cover on a regular head?
Battery appears to be in a wooden enclosure.
I don't recognise the battery brand/colors, but the word "free" is clear.
I am inclined to believe that it is from an English speaking country.
It is a small six.

well it does look like a small six to me. distributor is in the right place, so are the valve cover bolts, holes for the coil to mount to, temp/oil sending units, and the contours on the block and head look right to me. defintaely a small 6 (144/170/200/250).

im curious to how the side draft intake works, id doesnt look like it would line up with the intake ports. at least not on a log head.

agreed, the throttle cable heads the wrong way-engine is in the back of whatever it is-compartment looks tapered somewhat.

ok, i looked at it a little harder, maybe they would. the runners on the center go slightly outwards, and the ones on the outers go slightly inwards. whoever it was they did a nice job with that.

Certainly looks Boatish.

I would guess the battery says "Maintenance Free".

The side draft manifold also looks hand fabricated - the welds look as if they were done by hand.



Distributor really is the interesting bit with the small ignition module mounted to the side, as previously noted.

Could be an Iron Aussie head on a 200/250 block, In some sort of Aussie Boat.

The lack of apparent vacuum advance as well as air cleaner also suggests boat.

According to the owner, it's a 170 block. Unfortunately this is the only pic he sent, so I can't tell if it's a modified log, an OZ250, or an Argentine head? The valve cover and wire cover are obviously custom parts, which I assume were produced just for this application. This makes me wonder how many more are out there? Surely they wouldn't make custom parts for one or two cars, or would they?

I e-mailed back and asked if he would be kind enough to send a few more pics. Especially a shot from the intake side of the motor, as well as a full shot of the car. I'm guessing its an Argentine head, but that's just a guess? I sure hope he sends a few more pics, as it would answer a lot of questions. Quite interesting.....

Fuel Rail?

The only thing I see resembling a fuel rail is a few rubber lines hose clamped to some copper tubing.

Custom, technically I guess... haha

I was figuring marine, due to the battery location, and distributor.

but i was right about the fabbed engine bay!
