"exact same set up"- are you saying you have a PCV valve attached to the draft tube? I'll assume "yes".I have the exact same setup in my 1963 Ford Falcon with a 170. It pops off from the engine block constantly. Can we plug the engine block with freeze plug and connect from the air cleaner to the valve cover? WIll it work properly with that alternative setup?
Thanks!
A non-PCV (draft tube) system can have one crankcase opening. Any system with a Positive system (the "P" in PCV) that draws into the intake manifold must have an additional vent source that is at atmospheric pressure, as Don stated in post #18. So to plug the tube and have one exit to the PCV valve will not work.
Here's why- at heavy throttle there is little to no vacuum to pull the vapors in, and the spring in the valve is mostly closed. Heavy throttle is also the condition when maximum blow by is produced. Without an escape route to atmosphere, high crankcase pressure will occur quickly with many negative consequences.
You can move the valve to the valve cover, but there has to be another filtered opening somewhere.
Perosnally, I'd find a way to correct the problem of the hose popping off. The system as-is is actually a good setup.
