All Small Six What purpose have these bosses on the block?

I want to lower the engine block with new custom motor mounts, and the would collide with the bosses marked red in the picture. The bosses are on both sides of the block.

Would it be safe to grind 1/8 of an inch off of them (green area) to make room for the higher motor mounts?

I’m wondering if it was casted in the block to help hold the complete assembled engine in some sort of cradle during shipment to the vehicle assembly plant.

Hard to see the cast on the left. Is it C8DE-6015-C ?

If it is, below might be the correct de-coding.

C8 = 1968
D = Falcon (model the part was developed & billed for)
E = Engine (design engineering office that created the part)
6015 = This is the actual part number for the block
C = This means it was the third block designed for a 1968 Falcon (Note: C might not represent 3rd block design)

After search for over 2-1/2 hours, I found that 170 blocks also have the bosses.

How many freeze plugs does your block have on the passenger side?

I checked out the Ford 200GF-6005-A industrial engine and it has bosses.



It looks like they could be extra bosses to be machined and tapped for different types of mounts.

From what I seen in pictures from the bottom inside of the block, I think your fine grinding some off.

My casting is a 66 200. I see nothing on the inside that would be a problem. The distributor side is close the the drive hole on the inside, the other side there is nothing

Maybe they are from some point in the manufacturing or machine? The are pretty much flush the the oil pan surface so it would be a pretty consistent mounting appendage for machine work/ jig. ??

That is exactly what I see.

I skillfully cut them off with a Sawzall and grind smooth, so no stress risers., like getting free performance.

Just grind how much you need to take off. Then round the corners.

If I'm reading the digits to the right of the "straight head screw", they read 8G 12. If so, the block was made on July 12, 1968.

I've seen registration tabs like that used in the past to index the rough casting to it's initial machining fixture

I did fabricate new engine mounts that lower the front of the engine exactly 1". Plan is to use a 1" spiral spacer under my 38/38 Weber carburetor...

For anyone who want's to do that some things to consider:
- The driver side bracket and also rubber mount needed a little shaving to clear the oil pan and block
- The oil pan touches the front crossmember just a little bit (can be fixed with a hammer)
- I have a larger oil filter (Motorcraft FL-299), but with the engine lowered there is no way you can install or remove it. Only a standard filter will fit.

Will have to check if:
- The mechanical fan will hit the oil cooler lines coming from the radiator when installed
- Header clears front crossmember and/or steering linkage when installed
