I am swapping a 71 engine in place of a 61 log head engine in a '61 Comet. I have put it in and out a few times to check and modify clearances for headers, bigger tranny and different crossmember. Here's what I found:
Easy way is to simply take off valve cover and use front left and rear right head bolts through the chain from the leveler. (Careful not to bend the pushrods )
I didn't want to disturb the head on the built 71 engine so I also used:
The later log heads have two threaded holes along the rear exhaust ports. I used a few chain links attached between these attached with quick link to the leveler chain for the rear. For the front I attached a couple of links of chain to two threaded holes by the old road tube bosses.and hooked that to the leveler chain.
Also worked but don't recommend - attached leveler chain under upper starter bolt and front draft tube boss hole.
I am able to coerce the complete engine/bell/tranny in to the engine bay with a steep angle and some extra hands to guide it.
HAVE HAD MINE OUT TWICE-BOTH TIMES, I PULLED THE HEAD FIRST AND ATTACHED THE LEVELER TO THE DECK OF THE BLOCK(CAREFUL NOT SCRATCH-USE BIG WASHERS).IT WORKS REALLY WELL AND EVEN ALLOWED ME TO KEEP THE HOOD ON THE LAST TIME!GET A BUDDY TO HELP LIFT THE HEAD-IT'S AWKWARD AND HEAVY!
I got two extra long bolts to put in place of two head bolts on either end of the engine, and did them on opposite sides of the engine so it would not tilt to one side. It's worked several times for me! Unfortuneately, when laid the hood back on the windshield, one corner got stuck under the hinge and bent when I went to put the hood back on
BTW- pulling the engine/trans together is best- puting the engine back in alone and hooking them back up together while trans is still in the car is PITA if you do it alone. I did it last week at 1am as the car was half way out of the garage and I had to close the door before I went to sleep. I was not enjoying myself
