where to find a part

Hi, I recently took my newly bought 1965 Mustang I6 200 ci to the mechanics. Things were fixed, but the mechanic is having difficulty finding a certain part. He cannot find what he calls a "carb linkage bracket." From what I hear, if I were to hit the accelerator too hard, I could end up somehow putting th engine in full throttle without having control over the speed. Anybody have any ideas where I might find this part? Thanks from a noob!

huh... just make sure that there is a good throtle return spring, I'm sure you can set it up without the original bracket

Really good guys that are local to me. They usually have anything you need since they part cars as well as offer new parts.

Oh and I am not sure of what your mechanic is talking about either.

he doesnt need it just make sure that the throttle opens when you push the pedal and closes when you take the foot off... the closing of the throttle is cortrolled by a spring, usually a weak one on the throttle itself and another one that goes from the throttle lever to somthing else to pull the throttle closed... doesnt matter what you hook the spring to, should be easy to find somthing, i assume that the pedal is linked up to a pushrod to open the throttle... the lone spring built into the carb prolly wont be enough to close the throttle by itself, hence the other spring

you can get the springs at any autoparts store... even a regular old harware store has springs you could use... and for a while mine was hooked up to a wire twisted around the alternator bracked :roll:

OK, Mr Abrams - first go and edit your profile to say you're in Chicago (Illinois, not the musical ). That'll help if anyone can recommend suppliers or services near to you.

Next - can you furnish a picture, or find a picture to show the area in question? I'm sure somebody will have what you need in their buckets full of "goodies". We just need to see what it may look like.

All right Addo and 65stang200, I'll post a picture as soon as I get home. The reason I didn't post that I was in Chicago was because I'm on vacation right now. Thanks for the help, and I'll update this when I get back home!

what you call a carb linkage bracket was called an accelerator bellcrank in 1965 and common on six-cylinder-powered fairlanes, falcons and comets. Mustang sixes of the same vintage, however, didn't have them.

retrofitting one is a good idea IMHO, as shear forces caused by accelerator linkage and return spring will be absorbed by this lever rather than the throttle shaft. Too stiff return springs are also bad news for throttle shafts.

They show up on eBay sometimes, or you could go scrounge the local junkyard for one. If you or your mechanic are inclined to geometry, you could also fab up your own one from scratch.
