Which fuel pump?

Can anyone tell me why a fuel pump for a '66 200 would be any different than one for a '68 200? According to NAPA they are because of the pumps arm.

I thought any fuel pump for a 200 6 would work for my '68 block. Can someone explain to me the differences and why the change?

Chris,

As far as I know, all pumps are the same (or at least will work on any 200). There are some differences in pumps. 65 and earlier (maybe 66 too) have a filter canister on the fuel pump. The later ones did not, they used an inline filter before the carb. Personally, I like the filter on the pump, so I use a 65 pump on my 68 block.

Good! What relief! I thought I was loosing it (or at least even more).

I too wanted to put an earlier pump on with the filter but after talking with the NAPA guys I wasn't sure if that would be possible. Thanks for clearing that up.

So anytime I have a question regarding my '68 block...your the man with the answers!

I've heard the same about the fuel pumps as well. They should be the same. You can also have them (or another parts store) verify this by comparing the parts numbers they have listed or actually show you the two pumps, side by side, if need be.
an example- I wanted to make sure that there was no difference between temperature switches between a 66 (the head i have) and a 68 (the car it is in). Turns out they were both the same part number.

That's new to me. The US pumps are different from the Aussie ones in arm length - longer. It's attributable to the closer cam/crank relationship. The 250 fuel pump may vary, as I understand your 250 runs a different timing set.

FWIW, I just posted an Aussie '66 one off to one of the members here; he's going to detail it and swap the arm to US spec. It's a really cool glass bowl unit with a pre-filter. Hopefully, he'll post when its done.

Regards, Adam.

well the fairlanes had no filter....used a remote mount filter (like the FE's did)

has a little cast AL block that bolts to the engine block that the canister spins onto. had one hose nub and one inverted flare fitting (like brake line) my inverted flare was gone (rusted and corroded) so I tapped it out for 1/4" npt and put in a -4 an fitting and ran a -4 braided line form the filter to the carb.

Well, I did some research yesterday on the apparent differences in US 200 fuel pumps. The pumps are basically the same. Sure they may vary in looks and fitting connections but what makes them different throughout the years are the placement for the bolt holes. The earlier pumps had mounting holes lower than those of the later years. Hence, different arm lengths and bent arm angles.

So, Slade was right. Any pump for a 200 will work but it may not necessarily "look" right when bolted to a particular 200 block. Example - my block was manufactured in '68 and the mounting holes are slightly higher than those on a '66 block (which is the body year for my Mustang) but slightly lower than those of a '78 200. Anyone will fit but the "look" may not necessarily be the one you are after.

Anyway, I bought a new one ('68) and it looks good and functions much better than my previous one.

Thanks guys for the info.
