Which motor is better-1966 or 1978 200 inline 6

Is there a difference between a 1966 and a 1978 200 inline 6. And if there is, which motor is better to go with? Thanks.

8) the few differences are going to be things like a larger log on the later head, along with slightly larger valves, but a slightly larger combustion chamber. there are a few other detail differences as well. overall though both engines are about the same with neither one having any real edge. if you have a choice of two engines in similar condition, take the later one for the slightly better head. otherwise pick the one in the best condition.

Thanks for the info. I have a 1966 Mustang with the original inline 6 in it. Do you know if the 1978 motor will fit in this car with out any modifications? Will it sit in the same exact spot as the original engine?

I just bolted a 1978 engine 200cid in my 1962 Falcon in pace of a worn out 170cid engine.

Thanks for that info. Did you have to change motor mounts? And how about the transmission? Did you use the same one. Any small modifications I should know about?

shouldn't have to change the motor mounts, you might look at replacing 'em depending on how old they are, but that's not that big of a deal if you're swapping an engine

what transmission do you have? IIRC those two years have the same bellhousing pattern, so i don't think you have to worry about it, but i'll let someone else confirm that for me

as for modifications, the biggest difference between those engines should be the ignition system, the '78 should come with a DuraSpark II system, and they're better than the points system from '66

The 1978 maybe from a Fairmont or Zephyr?

The Fox body Fairmont and Zephyr's will have a rear sump oil pan and associated pick up.

You will need to swap over your front sump oil pan and pickup to go in a 60's Mustang.

My transmission is the original that came with the car ( manual 3 speed ). Is the Fairmont and Zephyr the only cars that came with this engine in 1978?

Guess I should mention , I bolted in the 1978 engine and C4 transmission to my 1962 Falcon.

My setup came from a 1978 Fairmont. I now have an alternator in the Falcon too

To swap from rear sump to the early style (mid sump) pan you'll need to add an early style pickup to the oil pump and relocate the dipstick tube to the forward hole. And you'll need the early style pan, of course

You can use the oil pan/pickup from the '66 motor on the '78 motor.

The best setup would be to go with the '78 motor, mill the head for 9:1 compression and keep the Duraspark ignition.
