Which starters can I use?

I may be replacing the starter soon. I've never been positive about which replacements are acceptable. I've been told that certain V-8 styles will go on my '66 I-6. You guys tell me. Automatic transmission, 3 bolt mount style; you tell me if it's a 'high' mount or 'low' mount:

I'd like a mini and/or high torque starter if possible.

Something from an "FE" engine

Any? Awesome. Are any special mods required or will it just bolt right up?

Ford starters are specific to automatic or manual transmission, although you can swap nose cones if necessary if you can't find the style you need. Three bolt starters like the one you have do interchange with the 360/390/428 FE engines, it's the 2 bolt starter that interchanges with the SBF. Your engine is high mount BTW.

Also, make sure the starter you get is clockable or can be indexed. Best bet I have found is Powermaster. You might try ebay also.

What exactly about the starter is 'clocked' or indexed? Talking about a movable solenoid switch?

Yes, the whole thing moves on a mounting plate. If you get one that can not be indexed the solenoid might hit the block.
