Will a Fordomatic from an 8 cyl fit directly?

I found a replacement Fordomatic for my '57 Custom with a 223. However, it came from a 292 V8 from a '59-ish car. Are the bell housings the same or can I just swap bell housings to make this work? I would assume the case is identical, but I want to make sure it's going to fit before I have it shipped.

223 bell housings and 292 bell housings do not interchange because the bolt patterns on the back of the engines are different. The crankshaft to flywheel bolt pattern is the same on both kinds of engines. I do not know if the v-8 automatic trans can be bolted onto the 6 cylinder bell housing. Air cooled and water cooled style automatic transmissions have different splines where the front transmission shaft enters the converter and also I think the outside stator support enters the converter. This is something to ask an automatic transmission repair shop or look up in a Hollander interchange book.
