How come I hear about getting a 70 mav. 170 head for upgrade on the 170's? They must have had two motor opitions ? :?: Or did they mean getting a mav. 200 head and milling it for quinch on the 170's ?
Thanks

Howdy Sefus:

Over the years, Mavericks came with 170s, 200s, and 250s.

Check the casting number on the top of the intake log, behind the carb pad. If you will post it here someone can tell you exactly what you have. The late '60's (CXXX) and early '70's heads were in a transition and change period.

200 and 250 heads are the same from the C9DE-M casting on.

I'm unclear as to what features you are looking for in a new head or what you hope to accomplish with it? More information would help in addressing your need.

Sorry to a stickler for details, but, as always, the "devil is in the details".

Adios, David

Sefus,

My two cents worth.

There is NO BASIC DIFFERENCE between a 200 head and a 250 head.

BUT if you want to know the difference between the 250 and the 200, count the number of bolts holding the water pump on.
The 200 has three bolts.
The 250 has four bolts.

And now you've heard from both the Schjeldahl brothers

yea after looking around i realized mavs dont all have the 250. i was under the impression that a 250 head on my 200 block would give me a nice little boost of flow. so its dependent on the year of the head for valve sizes and what not? i figured with the taller deck height and generally larger size of a 250 the head would give me alittle extra power. am i just as well off taking my 200 head and doing it up with all the right valves and porting and what not? i figure i would be doing all that to a 250 head, preping my 200 block and running boost - that being a good recipe. so what sthe story on the us250 head on a us200 block?

HI YA
With the 250 on the 200 you might have to mill the 250 head to keep the cr up (compression ratio). The 250 might have a bigger cc volume, on top of bigger valves and such. So you just might be better off with doing your orginal head. Unless it might have a bigger log to.
Just my .02

the compression ratio is kinda a moot point. im going to have to screw with finding the 8:1 with chebby 305 pistons and a 250 head on the 200 block. im just looking for more flow and that is what i thought id get withthe bigger head. Ill be putting in the big ole valves and porting the crap out of it anyway so will there be an advatage if im doing it to the 250 or should i use the 200? thanks guys.

As brother's Schjeldahl so eloquently put it:

It doesn't matter unless you are playing around with a head cast prior to 69.

ok so ive got a 68 stang but i dont know what year 200 is in it. when i went to get it there were 2 or 3 other i6's laying out...
