Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato engine codes question.

In 1978 to 1980, what was the code of the 3.3 engines in Mavericks, Granadas, Monarchs, Fairmonts . Was it always called a T-code 85 hp engine ?

I wondering if the low mount engines were differentiated by a special engine code for the 1980 year, and if perhaps the listed Mercury Capri 3.3 2 -bbl RS engine was listed as a T-code engine for 1981/1982?.

I've got the following factory engine codes for our little 200/250 in-lines see http://mustangattitude.com/mustang/engine_allci.shtml.

B-code is 1981 to 1982 Ford Mustang 3.3 94 or 87 hp I-6
L-code is 1968-1980 Ford X-shell 250 or 4.1 six (155 hp gross to about 99 hp net)
T-code is the stock 1964-1973 Mustang/Comete/Cougar/ 69-78 Maverick/67-77 Bronco/75-80 Granada and then 1979 return of the Fox body Mustang/Capri 1979 3.3 I6 85 hp engine

Note Well:-.

Z-code is the early 170 cid 2.8 Cologne V6 for Mustang II's, Fox Stangs and Fox Merc Capris.(1974 to 1980).

Sometimes, Ford used the T codes for other engines.

Here some early codes I have

1960 – 1963 Falcon & Comets
144 S Standard eng.
144 D Low Compression in 1963 this changed to code 2

Falcon & Comets Mustang Fairlane & Meteor
170 U Standard eng.
Merc 170 code D Low Compression in 1963 code R
Ford 170 code E Low Compression in 1963 code R
Ford 1967 170 code F
1964 up 200 code T
Merc’s 1967 200 Low Compression code 2

Mustangs
Year's Inline six Code
1965 170 U
1965 to 1970 200 T
1969 to 1973 250 L

Update.

We also knew that in 1979, the Mustang T-code 3.3 returned after a five year hiatus ( a late 1979 Mustang Z-code 2.8L 104 hp V6 replacement). The 1979 3.3L had 1-bbl and 85hp 6-cyl.
1980 B-code, Optional 3.3L 91hp 6-cyl
1981 B-code, Optional 3.3L 94hp 6-cyl
1982 B-code, Optional 3.3L 87hp 6-cyl

In 1980, the T and L codes got allocated a replacement new letter on the last of the Falcon/Fatstang/Maverick based Granada/Versailies/Monarch frame

Old Code Y is now Code A, the 140 ci 2-bbl 2.3L I4
Code B is now 200 ci 1bbl/3.3L I6
Code C is now 250 ci 1bbl/4.1L I6

But there is also a reputed X code 200ci/2-bbl Canadian 3.3L I6, not sure what year.

Oh dear. Lookes like the X code might have been a cooking model variation, and not a 2-bbl option

From http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/sho ... ence-Guide

1978-83 Ford Fairmont and Zephyr200 CI (3.3L) 1bbl I6
Vin code: T,B (X in 1983)
compression: 8.5:1
horsepower: 85hp @ 3600rpm
torque: 154 lbs-ft @ 1600rpm
Availability: 1978-83

Note: Advertised engine data varied in T, B and X code engines in other simalrly coded engines from from 78 to 83.
Compression varied 8.5:1 to 8.6:1, power from 85, 88, 91, 92 hp and peak power rpm from 3600 to 3800 rpm, and 154 to 160 lb-ft peak torque rpm from 1600 to 1800 rpm. The 85 hp at 3600 rpm engine is a fairly common T code output for the Mustang and Capri

No record of the 97.5 hp at 3600 rpm and 161 lb-ft at 1400 rpm Holley VV engine in the Motor Trend March 1981 Capri T-top, nor the B-code 1981 94hp at 4000rpm engine, or 87 hp at 3800 rpm 1982 Mustang/Capri engine

No evidence of a 2-bbl x-code six, sadly.

The X-code 1983 six is the really common powder blue colored low mount, big bell 3.3 six with the stock 1946 Holley 1-bbl, Duraspark, air pump, big foot ball primary cat and four bolt outlet header. Power varied between application, but no Mustangs got it in 1983, but
1.Ford LTD's,
2.Ford Fairmonts,
3.Mercury Marquis and
4.Zephyrs did.

It came with a C5 auto, but the details seem inconclusive...Amsoil's informative website has all four Fox body cars listed above with X code engines, but some are still with C3, C5, plus some 5 and 4 speed manual's. But wierdest of all, the AOD auto was a claimed Fox x-code fitment. How cool is that?

Diff's still follow some of the earlier Pinto/Mustang II/Fox/Ranger Sterling 24 spline 6.75/6.875 non limited slip units too, which I thought were gone by 1982.

You can search anything back to1980 there, giving valuable info on things like Jatco 2.3 B code 1980 Ford Courier which had the 4.1 L code I6 Granada automatic gearbox, or that elusive info on Dyna diffs...delightfull stuff.http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/vehiclel ... =1980+FORD TRUCKS+COURIER+B

And a check on CARB compliant EO D-193-84 approved cat converters yield similar info...

http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic_co ... fornia.asp

Foxes with medium wheel base 3.3's (LTD/FMZ) had the same cats,
while the long wheel base 3.3 Thunderbird
and short wheel base 3.3 Mustangs all differed,
This giving a reason for the varying hp and torque readings.
Interestingly, for post 1980 B and X code 3.3's, a set of Magnaflow cats which follow the 37000 and 38000 series Executive Order D-193-84 compliant items are around if you look.
