well... I havent posted on here for ages... but the old XD is still kickin along without any problems :)

over summer I swapped the 4speed for a 5 speed T-5 (4speed was getting pretty tired...!), thought id post the pics up here for something to do early saturday morning :D

had to change the uni on the gearbox end of the tailshaft

needed more floor clearance... washers + new bolts did the trick :)

x_adapter.jpg

couldnt find a crossmember that fit on the day, so made up a simple adapter.... bit of steel with 4 holes in it.

anyway... with the new gearbox, it goes a bit harder in 1-2-3 (shorter ratio's) and cruises nicely at ~ 2100 rpm in 5th at 105 ish :) fuel economy is also a little better... but cheap as on gas anyway...
since the box is lower... the x-member is closer to the exhaust, it rattles a little bit but only on reverse, so no problem there!

I almost got into trouble with it however, with the 4spd the speed would read about 10 km over... with the new box its reading spot on :o I managed to get off for 115 in a 100 zone

comments? :)
(sorry if the pics pissed anyone on modem off!)

Neat little adaptor plate. Tell me. Why didn't you clean the new box first?

hmm, to tell you the truth I didnt even think about it...
we took it out of a XF then transplanted it into the XD on the same day, I just didnt think of giving it a wash! :?

Was the input shaft the same?

The bellhousing?

Did the shifter come up in the same place?

Was the tailshaft the same length?

Was it a Single Rail htat you took out?

We hve a Single Rail in the Transit which is starting to get tired, and it really wants an extre gear, so we are thinking of fitting a T5.

Was the input shaft the same?

- yep, input shaft + clutch were the same - you need a new cable however because its on the other side compared to the single rail

The bellhousing?

we used the bellhousing from the car with the 5 speed - so you need a bellhousing from a crossflow 250ci (xf) 5 spd to match up.

Did the shifter come up in the same place?

yep, but we had to cut a little bit out of the floor for extra clearance - wasnt more than ~ 5-10 ml, just bent it back with multigrips. The shifter was a little bit higher, we needed to space the gearbox down ~ 20 ml for floor clearance - hence the use of the washers / longer bolts. If you find a crossmember that was made for the job you might not need the spacing however - 5 ml of that extra spacing was caused by the adapter plate we made up.

Was the tailshaft the same length?

tail shaft was the same length - but we had to change the gearbox end uni joint.

Was it a Single Rail htat you took out?

yep, took out a 4speed single rail !

the exta gear is nice - the 250 still has ample torque to pull my car along at 100 km.hr in 5th, and still overtakes without a problem without downshifting. plus, with my car it killed the annoying drone I had in 4th at cruise speed with the exhaust I have.

the garden hose is the gas pipeline.... ;)
well, I mean its the rubber shield for the copper gas pipe. the wire is going to the gas solenoid in the boot.
