xf falcon mods

I am currently putting together a project car (xf). I won't bore you with body mods but I will plead ignorance in terms of mechanical mods.

I would like the standard 4.1 to go a bit better (the original idea was for an eight but I just bought a house, low money, whinge, whine, sob). I would like to keep things realtively simple. I just want a carby engine, )no comp, no airflow meter, no injectors).

My plan is to restrict mods to head/cam. I want to polish the ports, shave the head (to around 9 to 1 compression nothing too high), run extractors and full zorst, standard carby (possibly rejetted), quality plugs, leads, dizzy. I then want to add a performance cam.

I wont need to rev it too hard. The HIGHEST i would rev it to is 5000rpm (in the occasional drag with mates). I would like to retain good torque but have better breathing, little more top end, few more revs. Just mild stuff.

I would like around 130 to 140kw with good torque (300-350nm). Is this realistic?

#can the standard ports flow enough?

#What cam should I use?

#Will I need roller rockers or double valve springs?

#Will the intake manifold/carby cope?

the first thing to do is get extractors and a 2 1/2" exhaust.then i'd go a redline manifold(the stock x-flow manifold is crap) and 350 holley this will give good results for simple "bolt on" items.you won't have to change your ignition.although the stock webber carb is a good thing you wont beat the holley for power.as 4 the cam/valve springs and head mods,if your pulling down the whole engine do the lot but it would be cheaper to do what i said and the cars still a going thing.then if you want to do some head work/cam latter when theres some more funds about just unbolt the exhaust/manifold and carb as you would the stock stuff.

cool!
What sort of results would the carb, manifold and extractors yeild? Would the car drop from (approx) mid - high 17sec quarters to 16's?

I hear the standard cam is pretty pathetic. If I were to simply go for a carby, manifold, extractors/exhaust combo, what cam should I run?

I guess I would like not to have to crack open the engine so just external mods and a cam would suit me fine. Any cam spec you'd recommend?

to do the bolt on stuff its very easy and will give good results.to do a cam your gonna have to take off the balancer, timing cover/chain pull out the old cam then take the rocker cover off and buy a $15 dollar tool to pull the lifters out(you have to put new lifters in with any new cam) then make sure your cam has been put back in properly.my brother has a 85 xf with a 350 holley redline manifold(we put these on) extractors 2 1/2 exhaust and a nice cam and it goes good(id say round high 15's).thats a good mild engine that will mix it with the v6 commonwhore clowns.to put in place one of my friends had a stock xe "s" pack manual with a 2 1/4 exhaust thats it,my other mate had a fairly new at the time stock vp commodore auto.we raced these cars heaps of times and the vp would beat it off the mark by about 1/2 car length and they would stay even all the way after that,so you may get it to go reasonably hard with just bolt on stuff then save some bux and do the rest latter.

my original idea was to buy a second head (cheap as chips). Polish the ports (although I have heard the intake port should only be de-burred not mirror finished???) and maybe fit some better lifters (double valve springs perhaps) This way, the car wouldn't be off the road too long as it would just be a swap over.

What air filter do you run with a 350 holley. I worry about machinery checks so I was hoping to have pollution gear in place. Could I just port the standard manifold? And modify the arig air filter case to fit the holley?

What cam specs would u recommend? Any particular companies e.g. Crow, COME, ivan tighe etc?

OPTION 2

Maybe I might not even touch the cam. i like the simple mods of exhaust, manifold, carby. I could still get the second head and polish the ports. What are your thoughts?

the stock x-flow manifold isn't very good 4 preformance,a redline manifold has the holes cast into them so you can fit back on most vac lines etc.ok with the air cleaner i agree,a stock air cleaner will not attract any cops etc.what i have planned is to buy a 4 barrel xc air cleaner from my local wrecker(he has 4 or 5 of them)for $20 bucks then simply cut out the bottom hole and mig weld it onto the bottom of the stock xf air cleaner, then do the same to the top so the hole for the wing nut is centred.then get it powder coated black.what you then have is a stock looking xf air cleaner whick you can buy filters 4 anywhere but fits a holley.and you can also hook up a cold air induction back onto the snorkel of the air cleaner.if you do the bolt on stuff first you can then buy a good head and then over time(while your car is still going)get the head and cam combo matched to your other mods for a good street combo that will hose off your mates and get the chicks

That project car of yours wasn't formerly registered CZP 111 was it evan? Just seems like a strange coincidence, that's all. Looks sweet as now. The best thing you could do with it is change the diff ratio- maybe 3.23 or so. You wouldn't know the car afterwards.

I think you might have me mixed up with someone else. I am building and xf with xd front and rear with full group c (like dick johnsons' tru blu xd) flares and wing. I chose the xf because of the better refinement and torsional rigidity (plus 4w discs, pwr steer etc) without a huge compromise in weight. it was originally going to be a 400hp 351 but since I will probably be using it more often than I thought (I am currently using two door gt that I restored as my work car and I want to put it off the road as a hobby car) I will need reasonable economy and refinement. I used to have a ea falcon mpi 5speed (with full cabriolet conversion! body kit etc) than ran 15.3 standard! (apart from 2.5 inch exhaust). I want similar performance but without ecu, eecIV hassles.

I don't expect the same top end but I would like to rev it to 4000rpm regularly (occasionaly 4500 - maximun 5000rpm) without worries.

What car did u think I owned?

oh well, that's cool. I sold my old XF to a guy called Evan about 2 years ago- coincidence thats all. The idea sounds awesome though, the xd front is by far the best looking falcon front end of that era. Keep us posted on the progress
