Hey
My XF is running poorly for some reason. It sometimes hauls like it should and other times i struggle to get to 80. I was thinking it maybe a problem with the carbie but am unsure. Some help would be appreciated.
thanks

Brett,

You should tell us more about your car. Tranny? Mods (any and all)? Mileage? Recent repairs? General state of the engine tuning?

What are you wanting at the end of all this?

Cheers, Adam.

C'mon Aussie, C'mon! Does a nocturnal flightless flapper have to help out an ANZAC?

Do a compression check with a rented vacuum gauge. Check the readings.

If no problem, then check off $80 for the expensive ignition leads from Ford. There shouldn't be any arching at night with the bonnet up and the lights off with the engine on.

I'm not a great trouble shooter, I just waste all my dollars doing preventative maintenance. Window wipers gave up on my XE today. Spent NZ$66.50 for left hand internal wiper arm. When our Ford Courier(Mazda B2600) did it at work, it cost NZ$277.

We all got to face it, maintenance costs money brother, and with crap after market ball joints, brake pads, shockies, idler arms, and pitman arms around, any sub-standard component is gonna make you want to drop it in the Pacific. I'd suggest getting an Ellerys or Gregories Shop Manual for XF Fords and get into doing your own diagnosis. I can stuff up three times, blow an engine and still show a profit on modern technicians looking at old cars. My local Ford dealer is one of the best in the business, but the guys who service old Falcons there have no idea.

And thats not a dig at good mechanics, just a personal fact I've observed!

My XF has 150000 kms on it. Eventually i am putting a v8 in it but am waiting till i have enough cash. It has extractors and a 2½ inch exhaust and sports air filter. I want more speed the car has been serviced regularly and never had many problems till this. I have a gregories manual but its hard to determine the problem. I want it to go faster and the fact that it can at times irritates me something shocking.
cheers for any help you blokes can give me.

Are there any general running problems? Does it hesitate when you give it some throttle? When you mentioned 'Problems like this', could you elaborate? Some symptoms and a scenario would go a long way to pinpointing an area to look at ;)

Yep when i do floor it, its pauses then go's, umm some other problems trying to think thats all i can pinpoint now sorry

OK, assuming it's an auto from your comments...

This being the case, your 'box is either in need of a service, or on the way out (and maybe a little overheated at some stage, too).

Time to flick that EGR valve. Not that I said so, but GET RID OF IT!!! Get a blanking plate to sandwich under where it bolts to the inlet manifold, and fit it using some silicone gasket stuff.

At 150 000, it's time for a new timing chain at least. Running hot can sap power, too. Does it tend to get a little warm (yeah, I know, it's been stinking hot here...)?

Buy brand-name premium petrol. Trust me on this one - also run a couple of bottles of Spitfire or similar through it ASAP.

There's plenty more, but this is a start.

A note on V8s: Clevos are getting long in the tooth, and are way overrated for light duty domestic use. Look up one of the importers and get a near new EFI 302W/AOD, and either run Wolf 3D or go to an emissions carb. Either way, fitting a V8 to an XF is trouble in ACT or NSW, as they never came factory, so compliance/engineering is where the grief lies.

Cheers, Adam.

Were gonna send the EPA around to calibrate your knee caps Adam...removing an EGR valve..very bad.
  :stick: :stick:
My Kiwi spec, Kiwi assembled Falcon has an EGR blank-off and never had ADR 27A compliance or even a compliance plate.

Apparently the line is that all Aussie cars must comply with the Australian Design Rules officially on registration, but thereafter, its a State Issue. But Kiwis never understood state issues, and EGR valves aren't a fav of mine.

:hmmm: Peter Brock used to use an ADR 28 noise rule violating dual exhast system on post 1985 Commodores by having them registered as an ADR compliant single piper, then getting the Dealer to fit the dual system.

Only thing I'd say is the emmisions gear only takes off 5% of power maximim. A 98kW XE Falcon had 103 kW in NZ without ADR 27A anti-emmisions gear...most of the loss was EGR related, because that's all there was on it. If it doesn't work, fix it! :smash:

I don't know if EGR really helps reduce  -house gas, but this is just my do-gooder opinion. :NZ: :rolflmao: :rolflmao:
