little brother is getting into fords too!!!!

he just rang me to go and look at a rolling xy body shell for him, they want 300 bucks, its covered in shallow surface rust, has no interioir , but looks like its never had a major bingle , there are a couple of small rust holes on the back left corner of the roof, it is missing a qtr panel and all glass, headlights, basicallly a ground up rebuild, its a Falcon 500 version. the only problem is he i s determined its gonna be a 8 not a 6, is this a worthwhile thing for 300 bucks?

Not for $300 it isn't. That's a $50-100 car, unless he can rustle up an extra corroded Fairmont for the inferior. Is it JG23, JG34, or what?

OK, JG34 is a Fairy. That gives it the good gear for a GT ripoff - rear door switches for the "C" pillar dome lights, nice trim panels and seats, probably 3/tree BW auto/250. Oh, and disc brakes. Tell him to save for a few months (yeah sure) and buy a used Windsor motor/box from the importers. This won't be kosher for a GT but it will hammer.

Adam.

addo,
he saw it and was keen on it, so he got it for 250

its not too bad, mainly surface rust.

we have got the doors and anything else thats bolted on off and is being stripped.

was talking to someone and found out that if you leave rusted parts, ie hinges ect to soak in molasses for a week it will strip off the rust.

That works, but you have got to clean it ALL off with water or kerosene afterwards. It also takes a fair while and leaves a blackish coating on it.
If you are only talking about small parts, try lemon juice diluted 1 part lemon to 2 parts water. You can also use Oxalic acid.
There is another way also which uses electrolosis to remove the rust. The part is placed in a non conductive container filled with water tht has about 1% sodium carbonate (washing soda, such as Lectric Soda) in it, and connected to the negative electrode of a 12 volt power supply that can give 2-4 amps. A battery charger is great especially if it has a amp-meter on it. The positive clip of the power supply is connected to a scrap piece of steel and also put into the water, but not touching the piece to be de-rusted.
The power supply is turned on and hopefully the flow will be 2-4 amps. If it is not, move the pieces closer or further away until it is. It is not too critical though.
It is CRITICAL that the NEGATIVE electrode is fitted to the part to be derusted and the POSITIVE electrode is fitted to the scrap steel, otherwise the part you want to keep will be severely corroded. It is also important that the clip of the battery charger clipped onto the piece of scrap is out of the water, or it will be corroded too.
The electrolosis will strip the rust off the piece you want to keep, leaving it looking slightly blue/black. This will clean off with steel wool, wire brush etc. The scrap piece will be very corroded.
The whole process takes a few hours, but there is no harm in leaving it overnight. Just make sure you spray the part in WD40 or give it a light coat of oil to stop it rusting again. Or you could mist it with primer.
