anyone got any ideas on how to hop one of these things up

I dont know much about fuel injection, but if it is a carburated engine there is always the header, intake & carburator option to make it breathe easier. Look at he FAQ's for both the small block and big block sixes here. I believe both offenhauser and clifford make intakes, a number of companies make headers and Edelbrock & Holley & Barry Grant make small 4 barrell carbs that could be made to work.

Stroke It!!!

My girlfriend had a cherokee with a 95 4.0. The onlt things she would let me do to it was an MSD blaster coil, and a thrush turbo II muffler, but it really woke it up!
But in my quest for knowledge, I found out that a 258 inline six (older jeeps) crankshaft will fit into the 4.0 block and basically bolt right up. making the 4.0 a 4.6 !!!!! If I remember correctly, bigger injectors are needed and I think ford injectors fit. of course a header and air intake mod would really help.

It's an 89, his is the carbed 258. The biggest bang for your buck is to put a HO 4.0 head on it. Then, put a motorcraft 2100 carb (1.08 bore) on it, search google for "Nutter bypass" and follow the instructions, upgrade your ignition to TFI (a search will give you instructions), put headers on it, redo all grounds.

That should net you about 50 hp and make it much more responsive and smooth running. Depending on where you get the head from, and it's condition, this can all be done for 200-400 bucks.

If you really have a 4.0 The best EFI intake is the 99-06 EFI factory intake
It has equal runners and will let to convert to the newer EFI system.
If you see a EFI intake like yours but has the 4 bolts (instead of the three on
older 4.0s) the throttle body that one will let you also run the newer EFI system.

The 258 crank idea is a good one, cept you would need bigger injectors most likely. It would make a nice torquey 4.6 (279?)
Naturaly you can always find high flow air filters,Throttle bodys and mufflers.

My daily driver is a 99 Wrangler with a 4.0.
