AC, alternator and power steering brackets for 223.

The first one is easy decodes as the head being cast at the Ford foundry on January 17, 1963 and making it near the end of production of the 223's. I can't make out the numbers and such in the second picture, the other block numbers probally are up under the exhaust manafold or in the indents along the oil pan rails. The third picture is of an aftermarket engine rebuilders tag can't help much with that, but it should give you the details of sizes of the internal rotating assembly. Depending on the code that company used the cranks Rods & Mains "A " may mean that they are .010 / .010 under size, can't read all the numbers on the bore size looks like 3.80? Good luck

Thanks for your input! Does the 4th pic give any clues? When I was searching for a water pump and water neck outlet and gaskets I had several options for a 223.

 sorry for being late to reply the water outlet gasket for a 1963 to 64 should be right to fit your head. For the water pump get one for a 1959 Ford car or Ranchero and it should be correct. How are you doing on your build? Good luck

I've neglected to post an update. I've been done since June and everything is working out great! I just need to change the manual steering box to my power unit this coming winter. I've not had any issues with belts slipping or being out of alignment

 wow garrilla that's some very nice workmanship and detailing. Did you do the pin stripping too? Thank you for the updates to your post. (y)

Thank you! Pin striping was done by a friend. I'm going to paint the manifolds this winter. Do I have to get year specific gaskets or are all 223's the same?

Most of the 223 gaskets are the same as far as manifolds, head, oil pan, timing cover, etc. the exception though is that there are two different valve cover gaskets used. Early models used two mounting studs with a large rubber donut and washer in centerline top of valve cover as the hold downs, the later models used about 8 small bolts and hold down flanges around the valve covers edge, like yours. So in your case since your head is a 1963 if you needed a valve cover or the complete top end gasket set (valve grind set) then get one for the late model 223 about 1963 up. Some gasket sets though may have all the possible gaskets combinations used in a rebuild set. Good luck

Hey Garrilla, do you have current pics of those mounts? It’s been a lot of years so I’m guessing you don’t have shop drawings. It looks like you drive the alternator off of the Power steering pump. Is that right? I just had one shoulder rotator cuff repaired and my right shoulder was completely replaced. I kind of got a stop driving manual steering and put power steering in the van. Any help from you would be greatly appreciated, your mounts look great, and I’d like to duplicate them.

55 Panel, It’s been a while since I’ve checked in here. I finished my power steering and automatic trans project on my 59 Ranchero last fall. You’re correct that the alternator runs off of a power steering 2 groove pully. It works very well. If I didn’t need the AC compressor it would have been easier to mount the alternator on that side of the engine. I fabricated the mounts myself and never made any drawings so if I can get any more pictures for you just let me know.

Thanks very much for getting back to me. I appreciate it. I’m wanting to put power steering on my panel and finding that I have to eliminate my column shift in order to do so because of the length of the column I’m really not happy about it, but my shoulders won’t let me drive the truck without power steering.

I had the same issue with the power steering box. It put the column universal right at the firewall and I didn’t want a floor shift. Have you considered a rack and pinion conversion?

I was actually doing my best to try and keep it as stock as possible. It doesn’t look like I’m gonna be able to.

This whole thing is really starting to snowball. I started looking for an R1 three speed with electric overdrive couldn’t see any mounting holes for a shifter then I started wondering about putting a T5 in it and still keeping the 223 six cylinder. All this because I need power steering. Sometimes you just have to laugh.

From what I see the rack and pinion kits bolt on to the stock front suspension. Electric power steering is also an option but would interfere with column shifter.

If you don’t mind me, asking, where have you seen a rack and pinion kit that works with the existing suspension it would seem to me that it would be much further away from the steering column than the standard box

Just Google 53 to 56 F100 rack and pinion and there you go. I you’re interested after looking at that I have a friend that is all about 53>56 F100’s that will make the best recommendation.
