Hi Site members I am doing some researching to gather up all the remaining parts to do an Auto Trans to Manual Trans Swap / change over along with a new engine build. This swap will use be using the 1967 up Larger Flat Flywheel, with 9 Inch Clutch, a 1966 bigger Bell Housing (Fairlane ?) it has the early narrow Trans Bolt Pattern, and a early style Top Loader 4 Speed Trans. Have found most of the info and Part # Numbers for the Clutch Linkage Parts except some of the info on the 1965 170 & 200 Six Clutch Equalizer Bar (Z Bar) is Part #C5ZZ-7528-A or the 2 1966 200 Six Clutch Equalizer Bars (Z Bars) used before 2/14/66 Part #C6ZZ-7528-A, and those built 2/14/66 and after Part #C6ZZ-7528-D. Pictures, Ford Shop Assembly Diagram, or the Tube length and other major dimensions of that part would be helpful so if all else fails I could then make one. Or if you happen to have a Z Bar you would part with or know someone who dose that would be also be great too.

Also I am looking for the Return Spring Part # that hooks onto the Clutch Release Arm I think these were about 12 to 14 inches Long or so. Plus also looking for one of the larger 9 3/8 Inch Clutch assembly's or a lead on who might have them. Ford offered these larger Clutches for heavy duty use, they were used in some of the early 1966 to 1974 Ford Bronco 170's and also some Military Spec Econoline's as well maybe some others like the Ranchero's or Sedan Delivery's from around 1966 to 1974? for 170's or 200 Six's that would be able to use these bigger Clutches. The 9 3/8 Inch Clutch Disk had Ford Part # is C6TZ-7550-B could use the the Pressure Plate Part # to help in the searching. Thank you for any help you can give.

I have also been attempting to gather all the 6 cylinder linkage parts. The main issue is no 6 cylinder Z bar is reproduced. I have sourced one for same in south Carolina, but he wants a lot of money for the condition of the part. There is also a company that makes a clutch cable that works for 6 cylinders: https://mustangsteve.com/product/clutch-cable-conversion-65-mustang/ This kit will require welding to the bell housing though. The part number seems to bring up 8 cylinder Z bars though? Here was a helpful comparison for all the 65-66 Z bars:

Also here is a thread that I made on Vintage-Mustang forum that was very helpful to me: https://www.vintage-mustang.com/threads/anyone-know-anything-about-z-bars.1207590/#post-10729650

I am also personally going to an early model yard this weekend to find my own Z bar for my T5 conversion. If I find 2 of the correct Z bars there I can snag one for you and ship it to you if you would like. I can also put you in contact with the person in South Carolina who has one.

Also about the spring, I think I know which one your talking about, but the only reproduction springs I can find are these:
This website has a lot of repo linkage parts. I have no ordered anything from them yet but I plan to as soon as I get my Z bar.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

My 67 is a stock manual, 9 inch flat flywheel. Are you sure you don't want to convert to cable or hydraulic? I'm really not a fan of the Z bar feel.

Hi, I hope this helps compile your parts list. Good luck

Hi, well I goofed up on the uploads, there are duplicates, but believe me, I am better in the garage than on the computer. Actually, it is a miracle I can do this good without any help! Good luck

Thank you akidwithacar, for that above Picture I can tell you that sure looks to be the correct 1965 Ford Mustang Equalizer Bar Ford Part #C5ZZ-7528-A on the far left since it has the Swivel Block on it for the Clutch Rod the first of 2 1966 Z Bars for those (built before 2/14/66) also will have that Swivel Block but the last 1966 Z Bar made for (for those built 2/14/66 and after) don't have that Swivel but the 6 Cylinder Z Bar is basically the same one other than that same difference. If I had the measurements from it I could make a new one or even convert a V8 Z Bar by lengthening the center section to the Six Cylinder Length they are a very simple part. I know all the Tube Length measurements of the various V8 Z Bar's but have not found out the measurement of those for the 170 & 200 Six roughly they are about 2 to 2 3/4 inches longer than some of the V8 Bars since the 170 & 200 Six engines setting in the chassis are that much narrower than were the 260 or 289 V8's. Yes I also found that too when I was searching for the 1965 Six Cylinder Z Bars Part #C5ZZ-7528-A, and the two 1966 200 Six Cylinder Z Bars Part #C6ZZ-7528-A, or Part #C6ZZ-7528-D Z Bar the Part Numbers are Right out of the Ford Parts Book. But for some reason the online search engines will change the last Letter so that only the V8 Z Bar's will come up after all they all use this same Basic Part # number except for the last letter will I.D. or is changed for the engine application. Edited to fix the Links!

Here is the Clutch Linkage Part Number Info that I found from the Ford Mustang Parts book

The 1965 Mustang's (including what some call 1964 ½'s) with either a 170 or 200 Six used these Z Bar Numbers and A,B, & F Clutch Rod Numbers. The 1964 or 1965 Falcon and Comet Parts are probably the same parts too I don't have their Parts Book yet. The V8 Z Bars measure from about 6 1/2 to 6 7/8 Inches Long depending on if it' s a Hi Po or not and are from 2 to 2 ¾ inches too short to use with the 170 & 200 Six that are around 8 ½ to 9 inches long. There are 2 1966 Ford Mustangs Z Bar used on is the same as the 1965 and the last one is a little different on the Clutch Rod hook up.

For the 1965 170 & 200 Sixes they used the #C5ZZ-7528-A, Clutch Equalizer Bar (Z Bar). This Z Bar used the –A- Rod Part #C5AZ-7521-E, that is 13 ¼ Inches Long. Plus the B Rod used is Part #C2OZ-7521-A it is 15 ¼ Inches Long. And also the –F- Rod Part #C5ZZ-7521-A that is 16 Inches Long. All these Rod Part #'s are also the exact same Part # Rods that were used on the V8 Model’s. so many are easy to find.

For the 1966 200 Six Z Bar they used the Part #C6ZZ-7528-A, Clutch Equalizer Bar (Z Bar) for those models that were built before 2/14/66. This Z Bar also used the same –A- Rod Part #C5AZ-7521-E as above that is 13 ¼ Inches Long. The –B- Rod used was Part #C6OZ-7521-C is 13 1/8 Inches Long. The -F- Rod used is Part Part #C6ZZ-7521-C is 13 ½ Inches Long. The –A- & -B- Rods are the same Rods as are used on the 1966 V8 Model’s the –F- Rod is a Six Cylinder only Part #.

1966 200 Six Z Bar used the #C6ZZ-7528-D if built after 2/14/66. This Z Bar also used the same–A- Rod #C5AZ-7521-E it is 13 ¼ Inches Long. The same –B- Rod #C6OZ-7521-C is 13 1/8 Inches Long. The -F- Rod used is #C6ZZ-7521-C is 13 ½ Inches Long it is a Six Cylinder only part #. The -A-& –B- Rods are the same Rods as are used on the V8 Model’s

Since I am using the C6 Larger Bell Housing along with the Larger Flat type Fly Wheel I need to also use the 9 inch Clutch Assembly see example below.

You don't need to use new if you can find a good used Original Pair like them. 1964 & 1965 Falcon and Comets should also be the same too. They are nice Parts however they are made of a Lighter Gauge of Metal compared to the OEM Pedals.

The Z Bar for 1965 Mustang for a 170 or 200 Six is Part #C5ZZ-7528-A, the Z Bars for the 1966 200 Six C6ZZ-7528-A, C6ZZ-7528-D Z Bar should also fit. But note that 1966 Part #C6ZZ-7528-D Z Bar will use different Rod Numbers.

These should be about all the parts needed to get a working Clutch Pedal System and Linkage when changing over from an Auto Trans. Below is a decent Video showing how to rebuild Clutch and Brake Pedal Assembly and also showing what parts you will need if you want to do a change over from an Auto Trans to a Manual Trans.

Hi Invectvus, yes a Cable Conversion is probably a good alternative, but those Z Bars really aren't that bad if all the bushings and parts are in good shape it is all I have ever used. Plus you can even Rollerize those parts to help make it easier. See below for some examples.

These are the Roller Type Clutch Linkage Parts that you can use instead if you want it easy

MUSTANG ROLLER Z-BAR AND CLUTCH RODS – (289-302) SMALL BLOCK V8 (1965-1966) If it comes down to not finding a Z Bar you could call and ask if they could make you a Z Bar for a 170 or 200 Six instead of the V8 Bar.

Thank you very much B RON CO, there is lots of good info you posted in there including all those hard to find 9 3/8 Inch Bronco Clutch Part #'s

put T5 in the '63 / 170 in place of the 3OTT and T5 in a '61 with a 250, 250 uses SBF Bell, Clutch, starter etc and the V8 width Z-bar.

Uses OEM linkage in the '63 with later 170 and C7ZA 170/200 bell from a Maverick. 63 Z-bar worked but needed lower pushrod moved for correct geometry to throw out arm.

Earlier linkages like '61 use adjustable top rod to pedal , later omits this. Maverick Z-Bar curves around steering column.

later Diaphragm clutch applications like Granada/Fairmont 200 application should fit bellhouse for 200. the '63/C7ZA bell uses Fairmont Diaphragm but original push linkage TO bearing.

hav fun

Ford 144, 170, & 200 Six Bell Housing Mounting Bolt Hardware sizes into the Block.

For the 1966 up 3.03 3 speed and 4 Speed Top Loader Transmissions using the Larger Bell Housing with the Larger Flat Flywheel and 9 Inch Clutches to the Back of the block:

4 X 7/16" -14 NCT X 1/2" Long
2 X 7/16" -14 NCT X 1 7/16" Long
6 X 7/16" Split Lock Washer's

If you are using a later 1972-up Bell Housing you might need to swap the 1 7/16" long bolts for 2 1/2"long bolts.

Trans case to bellhousing:

4 X 7/16" -14 NCT X 1 1/4" Long
4 X 7/16" Split Lock Washer's

Flywheel Bolts are 7/16 in. x 20 NFT with a under head length of 0.900 in. to 1.00 Long.

Pressure Plate Bolts, note that these Bolts have a special shoulder that fits into the machined hole of the Flywheel to center and align the Pressure Plate to the flywheel. "DO NOT" try to use a standard Hardware store bolt for this it won't work correctly. 1965 - 72 Mustang (Set Of 6) Scott Drake,. https://restorationpartssource.com/...-72-mustang-set-of-6-scott-drake-details.html

A 4 Speed SBF some other up to the 390 V8 Top Loader's can bolt right in place of a 3 Speed Top Loaders since they are both in the same family of transmissions. The front input shaft is the same 10 spline 1 1/16 inch diameter as the 3 speeds so they also go right into the stock 9 Inch Clutch Disk. The exception for this is the more rare Big Block V8 Top Loaders that only came behind the Hi Performance 427 & 428 FE V8's and a few of the Hi Po 429 V8's these had the Bigger 1 3/8 inch input shaft.

That said there are some differences in the main case front mounting to the bell housing, the early first year Top Loaders only had the the old narrow bolt pattern like all the other Ford manual transmissions from 1949 up, in about 1967 Ford started using the wider bolt pattern and some of these transmissions may also be drilled for both of those bolt patterns. So wit the 1967 and up Bell Housing will have the wider one, I an using a 1966 Bell Housing with the narrow mounting Pattern only along with an early 1964 to 1966 Top Loader 4 Speed Case. Next there can be differences in the tail shaft length and the were the floor shiftier mounting position for use in a Mustang Top Loader Trans for a 289 or 302 V8 will have the right tail housing length and shifter position, The Falcon and Comets 4 speeds will also have the right tail housing length and some of them had duel floor shifter mounting points and will then work in a Mustang but some will only have the Falcon & Comet mounting position and they wont work. The ones out of the bigger cars like some later model Fairlane's and Torino's have a longer tail housing and wont work right in the smaller cars. You will need the front drive shaft Yoke that fits and a drive shaft of the correct length too. The bad thing is that these Top Loader 4 speeds will command a high price, with the cost of a simple adapter plate you can also bolt up a 5.0 Fox Chassis T5 trans and get a very good modern trans with a bonus of an Over Drive.

b_______9 :

thanks' for the complete details - definitely copying that info into a file to keep handy ...

-----
while we;re at it:

the '61 with 250 uses a Toploader bellhouse with simple adapter plate for T5, the '74 Mav/Comet uses a T5 Bellhouse from '92 5.0:

SBF T5 bellhouse mod' for 250 etc , using OEM 3OTT Maverick clutch linkage:

to use the Pull-Cable 80's-93 SBF T5 bellhouse with original push-linkage clutch , the Throw Out arm from earlier bellhouse is used and a spacer-block fulcrum is added to the bellhouse. Fulcrum block is available from multiple vendors.

presume Ford big block six's using toploader trannys' would be same setup , although only 157 T FW is used on small block 250 (afaik) ...

.

pull-arm ball fulcrum is removed

.

hav e fun
