Loss of oil pressure at high speed?

Hi folks,

looking for advice on my 250OZ 1963 Ranchero.

Loses oil pressure at high RPM, problem started I believe after installing a DUI distributor. Oil pressure is fine at idle, (60-80 lbs) and under easy acceleration it remains constant. But when you do a severe launch the pressure drops to 0 whereupon I push in the clutch, shut the engine off. after 10 seconds I restart and the oil pressure is fine.

I don't recall this issue with the Duraspark II for the first 500 miles on a new engine - it has less than 1000 miles, running Claysmith Cam, Classic Inline aluminum head and Tremec 5-speed.

Anyone have issues with the DUI distributor and oiling?

thanks, Fred

Your problem is poor oil control inside your oil pan. Under hard acceleration, the oil rushes to the back of the oil pan uncovering the pickup tube. You need some modifications to your pan internally, such as baffles and trap doors to keep the oil covering the pickup tube, or you can damage the engine from oil starvation. This is a common issue with people drag racing using stock oil pans.
