170 hesitation on acceleration

:x I have newly rebuilt 170 cid w/autolite 1100 carb,3
speed manual tranny and pertronix ignitor in my 64.5 mustang. The problem is that in first gear as I get going the car stalls and dies, then
is hard to restart. Could this be a timing issue, or a carb adjustment I
need to do? The timing mark is at about 10 degrees. I've heard that the
old sixes can take a lot of advance to get right, but I'm afraid to do damage to the engine. Any help/comments will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,Bob

How does it run otherwise? How was it before it was rebuilt? Is this the same carb. Does it do it all the time, hot or cold? Is the choke operating properly? How was the engine broke in? Please provide as much info as possible.

Runs well at idle and in reverse. Is not the same engine, it's a re-manufactured. New carb right out of box. Hot or cold. Choke is operational. I haven't had it on the road yet to break it in. Just idling.

Yes, it does squirt gas. I was on other forums, and the suggestion was made to advance the timing so far that it pings/knocks, then back it of alittle, and it should be good there. I believe the balancer could be off. I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks for replying. I don't post much, but I do "lurk" around reading posts, and I get a lot of good info. Thanks,Bob
