1971 200, 10 above TDC, run colder plugs?

I have a 1971 200i6, and when I run wide open, I get a lot of pinging, which I assume is from detonation. The timing is set about 10 degrees above top dead center, should I be running a "colder" or "hotter" plug, and how can I figure out what plug to use?

It could be that the advance curve isn't ideally suited to the motor. Also, what fuel? Simplest fix is to back it off 2° at a time until it doesn't happen, and then another 2 degrees for insurance.

Cheers, Adam.

What octane is your gas? Are you positve it's pinging? Pinging, as far as I know, would manifest itself more when you tromp on the gas and your motor's under load. Some kind of valve train noise, or manifold leak?
