1980 200 I6 Questions

I have discovered that a 65 mustang we are restoring has a 1980 200 I6 that the previous owner had installed in it. I know it had an Autolite 1100 carb and a 65-67 disributor on it. The spacer plate is correct for the engine, so what carb do I need? Also what distribitor do I need? Are there any wiring changes that need to be done to make this work? Finnaly, could I put a 60's era head on it and it still work? Thanks.

Its not running now?

Is there a problem with the 1100? That would have been original for 65.

Any distributor should work in that block, its only the early ones that had the different oil pump shaft.

What wiring are you asking about? 67-74 is a 1 wire. DUI is one wire. DS2 has a few more but is still fairly simple.

I believe any of the heads will bolt on, its the chamber size/ compression you have to look out for especially at this age due to modifications ands repairs over the years. The block and pistons also are part of the equation.

Howdy:

Wow! I just finished your first post.

To answer your last question first, yes, an earlier head can be used on an '80 block. It will actually improve the compression ratio, as the 80 head has 62 cc chambers volumes while the 60's head will have 52c cc chambers.

If the 80 block has the Autolite 1100 and a Load-O-Matic distributor it is all period correct. An 80 engine would have had a Holley 1946 carburetor and a Dura Spark II electronic ignition.

If all your after is correct period appearance it will be easier to simply change the valve covers, swapping the later "Powered by Ford" for the early type.

Adios, David

Thanks for all your help! It was running, but rough. We are going to have the carb rebuilt and put a Pertronix Tune Up Kit on it. I also need to set the timing, I'm sure it is off too.
