1980 Head

Going to get a '80 head for the '66. What carb will I need? As I understand things, the hole is larger in diameter and the bolt holes are farther apart.

I've searched but yet haven't found the info. I'll keep looking though.

I was thinking it was the YF but then I was thinking the YF was for the 300.

Gotta get those hardened valve seats ya know. I have the later, bigger exhaust manifold already. Now with the bigger intake and valves I can unleash the dragon!

The factory carb on my '80 was a Holley 1946. There was/is an adapter plate also there orients the carb the right way if you want to use the stock linkage. Without using that spacer/adapter I believe the carb sits very crooked and would feel quite out of place around all the other straight parts.

lots of different adaptors for this 1.6875" carb that goes into a 1.75" hole.

The YF did service on 170, 200, 250 Mavericks, then Carter RBS for the Granada 250's. Or something like taht.

The little 200 got a 1946 Holley from 1978 to 1983.

The F150 carb was used on the 300, but can be made to work on the 200 and 250

Interestingly, the Holley can fit anything from a 2.3 Tempo/Topaz, right on up to a 225 Slant six, so a 1946 will probably do fine on any Ford six.

So the list of probables are:-

First, the 187 cfm Holley 1946 works too,
so does the Mopar 225 Slant 6 1945 Holley,
the 1-bbl carb of the first year 1949 Tempo or the 6149 series feebback version found in the Canadian version
The US the CFI unit off the 1984-1987 non port injected Tempo 2300.
The Carter YF from the F150 really works well too.

For 1946, check these out. Great, simple carb with a few little issues, but it'll work from 85 to well over 115 hp without too many problems.

There is a nice small adaptor used on 1983 Tempos to suit the 1949 carb they used. It allows the 1946 to fit under the lowest Ford Mustang hood.

my 79 250 had a yf on it witch is a good dependable carb but i would say if you want to unleash the dragon look at other options.
look at a 32/36 webber i thought they seemed pretty slick

If I remember right the 250 used an Autolite 1101 for a year or so. It might be more compatible with your throttle linkage setup, don't know for sure. Do you have DSII or the stock ignition? Do you plan some port and polish that seems to help from what I read. Should be a good performance increase with that big head and carb.

Howdy Back Rande and all:

FYI- The stock OEM carb for 1980 was a Holley #1946. The Carter YF was last used in 1979. Both are good carbs however; Both will require adapting you stock '66 linkage to the carb. Both are pulled across the valve cover. The #1946 is not user friendly when it comes to tuning for different applications and fine tuning for performance. It was designed to be a cleaner carb with many crutches to make EPA happy at that time. The Carter YF was used in several applications and sizes. It was tuned differently for each application. It is quite user friendly.

The 1969 Mustang came with a 250 engine option. That is the only year that the Autolite 1101, with no SCV was used. It's linkage will be compatible with your '66. The 1101 is rated at 215 CFM.
