2 tuning questions

I've got a couple of questions for you guys. The first is about the idle mixture screw of the autolite 1100. As I understand it, in = lean and out = rich. I just wanted to confirm this since i couldn't find a source online. The second question is about ignition timing. I adjusted my timing the other day, but I found that I could turn the distributor so that the mark on the balancer was far beyond the marks on the engine without any change in performance. Is that normal?

Yes, lean is in rich is out. Start in all the way (gently) then roughly 2.5 turns out as a ballpark place to start.

You may actually be adjusting your timing at idle only. If youmove the distributor as indicated and then drive the vihicle with some load on the engine, the change in the way it runs would be significant.
