200-6 exhaust help

I noticed on my '83 LTD that the catylitic converter is about 5" in dia. and bolted to the exhaust manifold. What can I use to replace that pipe and run a universal cat under the car? Maybe something from the early 70's?

I think that's what some people refer to as the "light off cat". There probably is (or was) a second cat after it. If you fit an exhaust manifold from a late '60s or early '70s 200/250, you can use a regular section of down pipe.

When removing the exhaust manifold, be wary of bolts that break, and the possibility of erosion to the gasket faces (head or manifold) from exhaust leakage.

Regards, Adam.

That thermal reactor is no longer available and the outlet would require something custome made to adapt an exhaust pipe. The best alternative, if you want to retain a cat, would be to get a different exhaust manifold and simply run a conventional exhaust pipe between the manifold and cat.

The one nice thing I have noticed about the "coffee can" light off cat manifolds is that they do come apart easily (the ones I have played with) and they actually seal up again when you put it back together (the ones I have played with)

When you take it apart, you will almost always find the catalytic material all melted together in one VERY restrictive chunk, along with some wire chain mail looking stuff around the perimeter. Clean all of that out of there and put it back togehter. You can replace the other cat downstream with a new one and still be emissions legal.
