I am starting to wonder if the previous owner got the wires crossed. Can someone tell the fire order and if the cylinders are numbered front to back or back to front?
Sounds like the order numbers on the cap are wrong.
The "port" on the cap where the #1 wire connected should be the one closest to the driver's side fender. And, from there, it just goes clockwise in the order posted here: 1-5-3-6-2-4.
I'll try to find a pic. of the wires connected to the cap.
Your cap really doesn't need to set pointing a certain direction. SOme people will get hung up on that. If you wanted it where the vacuum port was pointing more towards the fire wall or wheel well, just shift your wires once position counterclockwise (put 1 where 4 is, 5 where 1 was, 3 where 5 was, etc). then move your cap clockwise until the #1 wire on the dizzy is in the same approximate position as before.
Pull the dizzy out, and carefully rotate the rotor counterclockwise, so you move one tooth on the driven gear. Then, just pop it back in, and bump the starter to reengage the oil pump drive. That will move the advance counterclockwise, and keep #1 plug wire on the #1 mark. 8)
