How do I go about identifing the six in a 74 Maverick I'm looking to buy? Are there any distinguihable physical features that giv it away? the owner bought the car 6 months ago and let it sit now he's selling but he's not sure what motor is in it.

Thanks

Howdy Ken:

The "Quick and dirty" in a '74 Maverick is to look at the starter. If it's above the oilpan gasket line it's a 200. If it's below, it's a 250.

The starter location is a little easier to see then counting the waterpump mounting bolts.

Adios, David

Guys, is it true that the 250 uses the same bell housing as a V8? If so could I put an AOD behind the 250 (if that's whats in there)?

Yes, the 250 uses the same bellhousing as a V-8. I don't have any experience with an AOD, but I'm sure someone else will chime in.
