200 out of a 70 maverick

I found a 200 in a boneyard out of a 70 maverick. The motor is as is and they are asking 150.00 for it. That seems like a pretty good deal as long as there is no damage that a rebuild could not fix. Are there any high or low points to this particular year of engine that I should know. Supposedly it is still in the car and it wont be pulled until I pay for it, I just wanted to steer clear of anything that might not be worth building. I know there werent too many changes to these motors but I didnt know if there were any real "good" or "bad "years to watch out for. thanks for the help

Make sure the motor is correct for the mavy's year - otherwise it may have been swapped in some later time...

Code on head (intake manifold) will begin with D0 or C8 or C9. Code on side of block will begin with a similar prefix.

Make sure it's a 200 by carefully checking how many bolts secure the water pump - should be three.

Will they pull it out when you're there, or will they want you to come back after paying? Do you get everything between the trans and radiator?

Count the freeze plugs... a 200 or a 250 will have 5, the smaller motors have only 3. You can then tell a 200 from a 250 by starter location... the 200 has the starter at 9:00 on the bellhousing, on a 250 it will be at 6:00.

That will be a good engine for you to start out with. You will probably need to replace or rebuild everything inside it regardless, so just be certain the block and head is solid. Take any and everything they want to give to you. Alternator, pumps, pulleys, brackets, starter, wires, everything! That sort of stuff is getting harder and harder to find. If it has a 8" diff, buy that extra if you have to (even if it's 4 lug). Get as much of that drive line as you can afford. It will pay you back in the long run, even if you sell the stuff on that one well known auction site.

But leave those stupid looking seat covers! 8)
