200 question? verry confused

Ok so I really want to know why on some engine's the front valve opening covers are just plain like this:



But with my engine there is some tube coming out of the front valve cover opening like mine:

The hose goes to your PCV valve. (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) The ohter engine either has a road draft system (old, but effective). Alternatively the PCV valve on the first engine may be on the rear hole in the valve cover as it is on my car. Don't worry about people being harsh. This board is very understanding of everybody starting somewhere.

In simple terms, emissions.
The old style let crankcase gases vent to the atmosphere.
The newer style sucks it back into the engine to be burned.

Thanks guys thats a lot of help beleve it or not.

So how do you think mine looks anyways, it "ticks" according to my dad but seems to run just fine. I am planning on cleaning the whole thing up maby a power wash or something then I want to get a new valve cover and put on a two barrel carberator. Would this be a good way to start? I am still in highschool and I just got a part time job so my budget it very limited also.

I'd start by rebuilding the 1 barrel, and doing a really really good tune-up. Plugs, points (or swap to electronic ignition, like pertronix igniter), carb rebuild and cleaning, air filter, clean the engine up, check for vacuum leaks, change the oil, check the tranny fluid... a complete tune-up will get you to a good point where you can begin to upgrade. It will also give you better mileage, and help you feel more secure in driving the car. Also... that valve cover, if you decide to get some chrome one or something like that, I got dibs. I love those valve covers. If I were you, I'd clean it, de-rust it if it's rusty, and paint it. It'll look great.

The "power by Ford" valvecovers rule!
I would have one chromed before I bought a cheap taiwanese chrome one.
They look great painted, too.

A) Yes, I agree, nice heater bypass. Mine had that also, can't wait to eliminate the loop with a working heater core. Thankfully, here in Las Vegas, it wasn't that much of an issue when I was poor and in HS driving this car...

I haven't hooked up the heater in the ranchero, and last time I drove it at night I pulled into the driveway with ice on the windsheild and all over the doorhandles.

I was freakin freezing inside.

you just need a 60 amp alternator, some good lighter outlets, and one or two of these!

Geeze I just finished now rebuilding and re-installing the heater in my car. I found out why I had no heat before - the old core was plugged darn near solid with garbage.

I need one of those for Spring driving! Where did you find it? I gutted my entire heater system in the search for weight reduction......heater didnt work anyways...

I think your engine has the wrong cap on the rear. With PCV equipped systems, the crank vacuum sucks out fumes and into the manifold thru the PCV valve. Yours has that. But it also needs to be able to pull air into the crankcase.

On later engines there is usually a breather with a hose connected to the air cleaner to provide clean air to the valve cover. On earlier engines it is often just a filtered breather. Yours appears to be either generic twist on cap or a chevy cap.
