But with my engine there is some tube coming out of the front valve cover opening like mine:

I think your engine has the wrong cap on the rear. With PCV equipped systems, the crank vacuum sucks out fumes and into the manifold thru the PCV valve. Yours has that. But it also needs to be able to pull air into the crankcase.

On later engines there is usually a breather with a hose connected to the air cleaner to provide clean air to the valve cover. On earlier engines it is often just a filtered breather. Yours appears to be either generic twist on cap or a chevy cap.

Good catch, it should be a breather cap.

I'm about 2 hours southwest of Sturbridge, and since it was 16 degrees here this morning, I'm sure you'd want to get a heater going. I know I'm glad I've got the heater working somewhat on my Falcon. Another way to keep warm is this:

Only $20 from JCWhitney. I use it to augment the heat, and its way better than that cold vinyl. 8)

also...your inline 6 will always have a slight tick. That is normal...

I need one of those for Spring driving! Where did you find it? I gutted my entire heater system in the search for weight reduction......[/quote]

Googled "12 volt heater"

I think most auto parts/accessories places have them/can get them. Also on eBay.

Here's mine with the PCV valve in front and breather cap in back.

The odd sucking noise was a vac leak between the carb and the adapter flange. Found and sealed.

yeah it is going to be a year round driver so I will be doing a new heater and all. But I dont think I will be driving it till late spring so it is ok to not have one for this winter. Thanks for the little ideas though I really like the seat cover thing seems like that would be really nice to get into on a cold winter morning a 6am haha.

B) The "Power By Ford" valve covers are much acclaimed and often coveted in here. To show a virgin one like that on this Forum is akin to an 18-year old cheerleader lifting her skirt with no panties on at a bachelor party. Be prepared for offers....

I always liked that it said that but I wanted a chrome cover to get a little more respect of my engine when I open the hood. I think I might clean the one I have up and chromed. Im a sucker for the chrome.
I really like this one too though:
