So my car died a few weeks back. I am pretty sure it is piston rings that went bad. There is gas, spark, the timing is right. I'm not too sure what went wrong, but there is some oil in the combustion chamber. I think it was a prblem for a while and it just got worse over time. I was driving it and it just died and wont start. I tried new plugs, and I know there is a spark. I also know it is getting gas.

So I am going to rebuild it, unless someone has another idea of what to check that could be the problem. But as far as the rebuild I am not quite sure where to start. Is there a kit I can buy. I am just looking for where to start. Thanks

cool, thanks.

I didnt realize it would be that much. I may just get a used engine, looks like that will cost me less.

Do a compression check on every cylinder. That may reveal an issue more easily fixed than swapping another motor in.

Times have changed -back in the late 60's and 70's we used to just beat these small sixes to death. Was no big thing, tear one up; go to the junk yard get a motor from a wreck with 40,000-60,000 miles on it for $40-$50 (maybe $75 for a 20,000 mile motor) spend a couple hours doing a swap and back on the road again. Odd thing is, in the early 80's a DS module was $120 -now they're $17. Course in 1968 a six pack of beer was 69 cents, a pack of smokes was 35 cents and a solar powered calculator was 6 millon dollars and was the size of a 40 foot box trailer now they're $7 and fit in your shirt pocket. My first car was a 55 Crown Vic Sunliner and cost me $50 cause it had a cracked head.(heck that was a deal it had $50 worth of bondo in it), and a 65 Mustang cost about $2400.00 new.
