I have a '58 Custom 300 with the 223 and decided it's time to put some cash into the engine. I'd really like to keep the 223 since it's original and just help it out with new headers/intake/carb for now and maybe some other modifications in the future.

Yet, from the tone of this thread, it seems to be a lost cause and at least a grand gone out of my pocket for the bolt on's.

Is the 223 really not a good idea to put money into?

Hey SF223 - I've got a '58 Custom 300 with a 223, too (with 3 on the tree). I thought about doing a 390 C-6 swap, but it's gonna stay original for the time being. Great, reliable, economical engine and easier to work on than an FE. Sorry for the blurry pic.

I would keep the 223 also;for what it is worth,I have never been a fan of the Ford FE..Just my $.02 worth..

Hey SF223, If you go the rod route, you may not have the hood clearance on your 58 for two singles and may have to opt for the 4 bbl intake. Just somthing to check before you lay out some cash. Its not as cool looking but you won't have to booger up your hood.
Of course, two side mounted air cleaners would be different.

I was wondering about that. Is there a source available for different carb heights? I can get a 4 barrel Holley from a friend for next to nothing but then what? Run a super thin cleaner or still run a side mounted cleaner? Were the Offenhauser multi carb intakes just for the trucks or modified hoods?

bigsix where did find the turbo 223 picture? That thing is nuts.

The offy twin carb intake was designed for the engine, not for any specific car. When I get back home, I'll check to see how high the air cleaners are abve the valve cover.
As for the carburation, the smallest Holley 4 Barrel runs at 390 cfm while the 2 Holley 1904's that I am using run at 440 cfm total

SF223, The top of my front aircleaner is 4.5-5 inches higher than the valve cover. Thats about 8 inches from the front of the cover. If you have 5 inches of clearance at the FRONT of the valve cover you can do the duals without much modifying.

Thanks for the info wisconsinmike. Looks like I've got some creative measuring to do this week.

With the hood open, lay a straightedge across the fenders, Measure from the top of the cover to the underside of the straightedge. You may have to deduct from that measurement for hood crossmembers.
Off to Texas for a week, Bye.

Jeez, SF, that's one damn slick 300! Your lucky you don't have those two extra doors stuck on like I do. A fresh repaint with 2002 Ford Silver Frost over Highland Green. Hockey stick rocker moldings are next. Hope you'll bring your car up to Hot August Nights this year. My Yahoo photo hosting must be boogered up again, so I'll try it again  . .

I have a 1953 Ford F-100 that has a 215ci motor that I would like to put 262 pistons in the old mill, give it some more get- up - and -go. If that would be possible, what other modifications could I do to make it more fun to drive? Pulse I am planing to put on a Accel Superstock coil next week. Six volts just don’t cut it in today’s time’s lol!

Thank you all for your commits.

Sincerely, 8)

I don't think the 262 pistons will work. The 262 is kinda hard to come by these days. Look around for a old Offy intake, and try a better cam;that should pep up the old 215..good luck 8)

Yes the port layout is peculiar on these engines; I had one in a 1959 f-100 nearly 20 years ago & it was very smooth & fairly powerful, the intake/exhaust ports are on the drivers side;very strange for a ford, 4 intake & 6 exhaust. I think Ford did the right thing by replacing it with the 240/300 sixes, it's unfortunate that they did not make them larger than 300 inches.

Ah, but my father used to build Race motors out of the 7 main, 300 I-6 & had the good foutune to be able to get 500 hp on a regular basis out of them.

hey

noticed the alternator on the turbo was an old chrysler unit....any tips on what i'd need to do to put one of those on my 223? generators are quaint, but kinda' stink as you all well know.

Put a GM  three wire setup on the F2 back in 2000. Paid $3.00 at a swap meet for the alternator and $15.00 for a rebuild kit at the the local farm store. Made the brackets from parts off an old sleeper sofa frame.
'Borrowed' a battery from work and maybe $10.00 worth of bulbs.

The only problem I had was when I broke the brushholder during reassembly of the alternator. Got another one but it was like trying to find hens teeth. Apparently, nobody rebuilds there own alternators anymore. The system works great and its nice to have an indash radio now instead of a boombox on the seat.

My 6volt system worked great, would even start in -0 temps but got tired of paying a premium for 6volt parts.

BTW, I returned that 'borrowed' battery.

i did a similar gm alt install on my '54 back in college. since i have a couple of spare chry. units, just thought i'd see what that took.

thanks for the help.
