I am looking at getting a 61 ford f100 with a 223 in it. I am just wanting to know some of the pros and cons of this motor. And also why dosen't it have the following the other 6s do? (design flaw, poor performance, reliabilty issues)

It's a 4 main motor for starters, so some might see this as a reliability concern. That said, there are plenty of old truck sixes much larger with four mains... Also, the vehicles it was fitted to might be either junked long ago, or be subject to one of either faithful restorations, or hotrodding including a different motor.

The 240/300, being in production until comparatively recently has still a genuine "work truck" aspect to it, so enhancements are perhaps more common to simply add a little power to a practical vehicle.

The fact that stuff doesn't immediately present itself should not deter. You can have an electronic distributor made up, headers are probably on someone's list, and cams could be reground to performance grinds. A cast iron intake manifold can be brazed to fit plates mounting twin carbs, for example. Bellhousings could be modified or adapted to fit later boxes. Just because you can't call up and buy it like parts for SBC doesn't mean it's difficult!

There's plenty to work on, and a customised original 6 cylinder motor would be an interesting part of such a vehicle as the '61.

Regards, Adam.

That sounds great. I am always into being differant. Am I am a machnist so I have the tools and skills to make just about anything. Do you know of anybody that makes headers for it that will work in a truck? Also did compinsate for the lack of mains with larger ones (wider) in these motors?

Thanks Again for the info

Well, the 223 came out in '54. Between that time, and when yours was made, there would have been ample time for refinement and improvement if market "feedback" dictated it necessary. These motors were never really built to rev, so that will always define your build a little. I don't have specs on the mains but would imagine they are pretty substantial (equivalent International Harvester motor bearings were 3¾" dia, for example).

For headers, Clifford list them still:
53-0020 1952-64 223 Street Rod Headers Truck Only $289.00
Hang in there. You'll enjoy making something different!

clifford performance 6=8
makes a four barrel intake manifold and headers
offenhauser still makes the dual carb intake manifold. I cintacted an offenhauser distributor and the looked it up.
most of the engine components I bought off e-bay.
I have an offenhauser finned valve cover, offy dual carb manifold
two finned air cleaners from vintage speed, and am inthe process of having the side cover and fan chromed.

I run a '62 F100 with a 223. It doesnt put out the most power, but its a good motor. I'v got about 35k on it since a rebuild (which was cheap and easy), and it runs like brand new. I replaced the ignition with a pertronix electronic setup, and had some aftermarket work done to the carb (running a holley 1bbl downdraft, stock i believe..)

I have clifford headers and intake sitting in the garage waiting on time.

Its a good motor. Dont overheat it, and it wont let you down.

The 215/223/262 family of engine is virtually bullet proof.
One small draw back is that is doesn't breathe as effeciently as the 240/300.
But when built correctly it'll blow the doors off an 8 any day of the week.
