Hi guys, I am new here.I was wondering has anyone ran a mid sixties toploader 4 speed behind a 223/262?What bellhousing would be the one to convert this setup?I have 3 262 engines,& a couple of 4 speeds,I would like to put this setup in my model a sedan. Thanks Charles

Use any car belhousing for a 223 (some of the truck ones are thicker although the light duty three speed pickup bellhousings with the motor mount side ears should fit) and if your toploaders are from the FE v8 motors all will bolt up if you use a matching clutch disk. If the toploader is from a small block, the imput shaft will be too long and will bottom out in the hole in the crankshaft or on the pilot bearing. A good but crude fix is to shift the trans into neutral and chuck and dial indicate straight the input shaft pilot end into the four jaw chuck of a lathe about 3/8 inch and support the rest of the transmission on the lathe ways with the steady rest on the tail shaft and blocking underneath and cut the spline back to the length of the big block spline which is the same length as the stock 6 cylinder spline. The machinist will have to use a carbide bit and cut slowly because of the interupted cut. Finish the cut to the same diameter and finish as the original pilot shaft. Remove the transmission from the lathe and use a cut off wheel or hand grinder to cut the front end of the pilot shaft to length cutting slowly and intermitently and using cooling water to to avoid changing the steel temper. Use the same grinder to taper the end of the pilot shaft and spline as stock so it will enter the pilot bearing easily. Do not dismantle the transmission. If your toploader is the 1&3/8 x10 spline from a 427 (real overkill) things will bolt together using the matching clutch disk. The throwout collar on the trans may have to be trimmed also. Or you could have the machinist make you a spaacer. Or you could buy all the new parts needed and feel more righteous but poorer. This would also work with the SROD toploader overdrive 4 speed from 80s mustangs. Good luck.

ok so i got a question. i did some nosing around on the net nd i found that the tremec trans has the same bellhousing bolt pattern. so in theory, we could bolt up a tremec behind our 223's. am i on the right path here?

where have you guys been gettin your rear main seals. are they rubber or rope?does the 64 223 have a rope rear main seal?
