mooney,
I have to say i like your thinking but.... Mazda has taken the RX7 and made a super car out of that rotary engine. i think with all that is out there for the rice rockets putting a iline 6 would not be worth the while. If you think you can do it i say go for it but i would take the rotary over the inline in a rx7 any day. you can get some serious fast quick awesome handling rx7s with little effort.

The added weight alone would be reason to skip this swap. The handling would go to Sh#t. The rotary is often used as a swap INTO other cars, not the other way around. The only engine that would be worth puting in a car like that trying for more brute power would be the Buick 215 aluminum V8. Weighs the same as most Japanese 4 Cylinders with 2-3 times the power.

The other issue you would need to address is your local emmissions laws. Unless you live in the boonies, you can't put an engine in your car that is older than said car or of worse pollution production.

Build the hell out of a rotary & you can smoke most cars on the rod. One moving part. Hard to go wrong. The straight six is not the answer to everything. No, really, it's not.

Actually a SB Ford or Chevy is a somewhat popular swap into a RX-7 there used to be a Ford 302 kit out that even came with headers.

and yes we have two more cylinders on the end so its a wee bit longer. But the 250 should be alot lighter than a 302.

Sure, there are kits to put a V8 in an RX7, but as I said, the handling would suck. The cast iron V8s, V6's & I6's would be way too heavy for that car. I've seen VW bugs with V8's front or rear & they are only for show &/or drag racing. If that's all you want to do, great. But I'd still go with the 215.

If you really want to do it, call Carrol Shelby & see if he can help you build a front end that won't buckle under the weight (& maybe even handle well when yer done).

can we do it the other way? Put a hopped up rotary engine in our coupes?

Look for a article IIRC done about a Curtiss-Wright wankel rotary engine powered Mustang. They were working on a rotary engine and put it in either a 65 or 66 Mustang. And they ran tests on it and IIRC it actually ran pretty good.

mustang six and all,
That is a really interesting read. I have heard of this being done and seen some crazy things like it (ex. 5.0 Miata). I think if this guy can work out the bugs it will be a fun and crazy ride. It sure is original. However, it has been my experiance that most of the time the bugs in these kind of swaps are kind of like roaches. No matter what you do you will not kill them all.

I saw a guy in a hopped up miata (NOS etc.) TAKE DOWN A MUSTANG 5.0 in a street race in Philly back in the day. You could hear that think 3 blocks away.

Beat him bad too

I also saw a 79 trans am do a wheel stand 1/2 way down the "track" and beat a motorcycle (600 cbr)

wild!!

speaking of sites,
I saw a fiero beat the pants off a mustang 5.0 and i have a friend that ice races a supercharged MR2. He can whip a nicly modified mustang anytime. I think speed can be associated with any vehicle if the desire is there. Not to mention the $$$$$

There are a few guys I know that take their Mustangs to open track events and one was telling me about his troubles with a MR2 turbo. The MR2 was infront of him and he could catch it on the straights but couldnt hang with it in the turns.

the mr2 is one of the best rated handling cars around. i used to have one and it is great. i read in road and track that it compare to the acura nsx in handling. it is awesome. i could corner at 40 mph with no problems drop it into second and listen to the tires screech around the corner. my wife grew to love it but it scared the sh*&* out of her the first time. that car is also really light. the supercharger can get some good hp and some get up and go quick. good on gas to.

here's a V8 swap fer ya....... if your into swappin stuff......... I built a 1988 Fiero GT swappin the v6 with a SB 327 .... Definatly worth the effort! Plus it'll SCARE the hell outta-ya!
