I tried pressing a set of 5/16" Milodon 302 rod bolts into a set of 170 rods and they seemed to fit fine. I kept the rods because they are the same as a 200 rod and are the earlier forged ones. I know some people use 11/32" bolts in their SBF V8's and must have the rods machined for the oversized bolts. I believe the 11/32" rod bolts are overkill in a buildup using a stock block. When I was stationed at Edwards AFB in SoCal, we used to race at LACR in Palmdale, and I saw many guys racing their stock short block Mustangs with 200 to 250 HP nitrous kits. The blocks would take it for about a year before it would crack from the main webs up to the cam bearing bores. I have seen the whole bottom ends come out of the block and the crank break in 3 pieces, but the rod bolts held on. I believe the 5/16" bolts should be fine in a 170, 200, or a 302. You shouldn't have to have any special machine work done above the standard resize and balance work when putting new 5/16" bolts in for a rebuild. I believe the 7/16" sets Mike has at FSPP are main and head stud sets. I don't believe there is enough meat in the 200 rods to even get to a 3/8" bolt, and the 11/32" would be overkill.
