2bbl carb conversion?

Its been awhile and I need to get the old 66 a bit more road worthy. First stop is to ditch the old 1 barrel carb that just never wants to run right. Ran better after the rebuild but still never ran right. So I want to do a 2 barrel conversion. Found a Autolite 2100 locally for cheap and I have a knee mill sitting in the garage (plus the skills to make the adaptor plate and just about anything else I might need). How hard can this be? The machine work should be cake. The tricky bits are in all of the details to get this thing to work right. I am 99% sure I will need to get a new distributor and ignition. What would be the thoughts on doing this on the cheaper side:

Mill log head
Make adaptor plate
install 2bbl carb
get DSII distributor
Get GM HEI Module
Get Ford TFI coil
Get new wires
do a bunch of other misc stuff to get carb linkages gtg.

From what I have read this should be relatively easy to do the ignition and distributor set up. Milling the log on the old 200 should be fairly strait forward. Making the adaptor should be strait forward as well. Might need a couple spacers to get the carb up to the right height to clear the Valve cover. Then get or make some sort of snorkle device and I should be good to go other than some tuning on the carb. Does this sound right? I think I can pull all this off for under $250 in parts and materials (excluding the snorkle and piping). I just don't want to buy a bunch of parts only to find that its not going to work. Thoughts?

The head might require a few more $$ if it needs valve guides or something.
You could get the valve pockets hogged out while you're there.

Don't want to go dumping a ton of cash into this head as the end goal is to get an Aluminum head on there. Every penny I save here can go to the AL head. But the motor does run pretty good and strong when the carb is in its very narrow happy place. So I am not too worried about the valves. But the more I look at it the more I think the problem is a combo of the distributor and the carb. I think ditching those should make this thing work really good, assuming I do it right. At least that the hope.

If you still have points swapping to electronic ignition will help out a lot. Its give it a higher spark and your spark plugs stay cleaner. I upgraded to the petronix which works great, but I want to upgrade to the D.U.I now.

Picked up a used mc2100 carb for $40. Going to throw a rebuild on it then start the conversion on the head. Going to make my own adapter plate. But I just had to pull the 22re out of my 4runner to do a few thing to it so the mods to the stanv will have to wait. On the plus side, I think I figured out a way to do the duraspark distributor conversion for under $150 or so. I am also going to be doing a hyrolic clutch conversion shortly too. Just need some funds and some e tra time and I will be set. Too bad its going to be awhile.

I thought the Duraspark was just a drop in swap? All I know is that on our Fairmont 24 Hour of Lemons car we have swapped the 79 electronic dizzy into every motor we have run with no issues whether is came out of a 68 mustang or a 65 Falcon.

I did the 2bbl conversion. It was pretty easy. I did have to build up 1 corner of the log with JB weld to get a good seal on my home made aluminum plate adapter.

Have you ever heard the saying "Most carburetion problems are in the ignition"? If its not running right with the stock 1bbl and you think a home made 2bbl conversion is going to solve everything you are just trading 1 set of issues for another. I would get the modern electronic ignition on there first and see if it runs any better.

Yeah. I was thinking about just doing the dizzy and see what happens, but there has always been issues with the carb since we got it. I just want to do something like this for fun. i got a 3000lb knee mill in my garage i feel i need to justify having it. Ultimately I want to do the aluminum head and EFI. But for now this would make the car more drivable.

If I had a Knee Mill in my garage.... well thats all that would really be in the garage...

I think the conversion will be worth while

But you Cant be the .55 spark gap from the DUI makes any carb run great
