I searched but did not find anything on 3 bolt starter compatibility so here’s the question. What’s the differences in 3 bolt starters?
Yesterday I replaced the starter on my 200 high mount. The starter I had been running came off a 170 that was well used. The first reman starter I got had fitment issues. So I took it back and got another reman same part number. The second starter fitted with no issues. So I started researching 3 bolt starters and it looks like the first reman was from a 1962 econoline but I don’t see when the econoline had an auto trans option. The problems I had was the snout hit the torque converter and the dipstick tube brace did not fit onto the starter bolt without removing metal from the starter to flatten the mounting surface. The other difference was this starter appeared to be 3/4” shorter in the body. Appearance wise it looked exactly like the old 170 starter at first look and I had it in before I noticed the casting difference at the bolt holes.
For clarity this is the first new/reman starter I have ever put on a 170/200 automatic. All my other starters have come of engines I have or my parts pile.
